Fernando Hernández, one of the most talented football players in Costa Rica's history, is best known in his country as "El Príncipe" (The Prince). An idol for the fans of Deportivo Saprissa, he played his entire career for that team. Príncipe's style of playing was very elegant, classy and effective, and is often remembered for being the best shooter to have ever played the game in Costa Rica. His shots were famous for being accurate and very strong, which is a combination many players find difficult to make.

He played during the 60's and 70's with Costa Rica's national team and for Saprissa, winning a total of eleven titles with them, including the famous six consecutive championships won by Saprissa from 1972 to 1977, a record both in Costa Rica as well as in the American continent. He was part of the famous Saprissa's midfield whose way of playing made history in the CONCACAF region. His brother, Francisco Hernández, played with that Saprissa's midfield too.
