Solicitation

DO NOT POST REQUESTS FOR CLOAKS HERE. You're supposed to contact me via IRC and have me point you to the location of the proper cloak request page. I will not service cloak requests made on my talk page.

I also don't appreciate talk page spam. You know, when you paste a message on a dozen pages about "come vote for this proposal here!" or "vote for me in the arbcom election" or something like that. If you'd like my personal attention, leave me a personal message. Otherwise, I'm probably either a) already aware of your proposal or b) too busy doing non-Wikipedia stuff to give it any meaningful attention.

Thank you for your concern!

[edit] With regards to Jdforrester's note about the point of running for arbcom

In a conversation, Jdforrester pointed out this note on his talk page:

Your change to that page smacks of self-promotion. Your platform may be to retain the status quo in how the Committee operates, but other candidates (and many editors) are seeking a fundamental change in that process. Please revert your change, and feel free to express your view on the talk page or your own statement. -- Netoholic @ 20:27, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

The fact that the Arbcom has no authority to redefine itself is policy, not an election platform. An analogy: Running on such a platform would be like running for a school board on the platform that you will abolish the school board- but state law has defined that there will be a schoolboard. While there is nothing prohibiting you (or another candidate) from running on this sort of platform, it demonstrates that you miss the point of running, and have another goal in mind: a goal which will not be fulfilled directly as a result of your election. Now, you may collect votes from people who either have missed or willingly ignore the traditional 'point' of this candidacy, but ultimately if you get elected and then try to grossly restructure the arbcom in this manner, you're likely to either be thwarted by your fellow arbitrators or possibly ejected by Jimbo. Your confusion or protestation about this matter only hilights the need for such a statement pointing this fact out. -User:Fennec (はさばくのきつね) 22:30, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

By stating on my page that "(the) fact that the Arbcom has no authority to redefine itself is policy", I think you are failing to understand how that committee really operates. A cursory look at the history of the Arbitration policy shows that Committee members often redefine that body and its operating mechanisms. I think if you asked Jdforrester, he'd agree with that statement since he has been quite active in the changes to that policy page. It's flatly wrong for him, or you, to say that running on a platform which advocates change is inappropriate. -- Netoholic @ 05:03, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Do you support the creation of a Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Code of Conduct as I have just now suggested at User talk:Jimbo Wales#A sincere question? - Ted Wilkes 18:28, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Final statement

I have revised my final statement in regards to Nobs01 and others, please have a look if you have the interest. Cheers, Sam Spade 07:44, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

Immediately after posting I noticed your request for personalised notes, and it occured to me that I should give you some special thanks for having looked into this case at my request (assuming of course that was why you did!). Regardless of how much we ended up in agreement, it was thoughtful of you to look into the matter. Merry Christmas, Sam Spade 07:48, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Questions

Hello Fennec. This may sound odd, but the coincidences are too great for me not to be curious. Anyways, scroll down to the bottom of this. Are you the Fennec listed there? YOu can answer on IRC, e-mail, whatever. Thanks!--Sean|Black 07:40, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

  • No, I'm not. In 1992 I was in sixth and seventh grade. That isn't my style of art, anyway. :) -Fennec (はさばくのきつね) 15:22, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comment

I'm not interested in any kind of crackdown, but I disagree that administrators should be bold with their admin powers. My concern is that some administrators have come to believe that it's their job to the arbiters of policy and good taste. I think such matters are properly reserved to the community. I'm not trying to cloak my words; rather, I felt that I should explain why I hold my opinions. Mackensen (talk) 20:28, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IRC Cloak

I've already got a generic cloak, as you have apparently not logged in to IRC in over 2 weeks according to the ChanServ/NickServ bots, freenode staff told me to ask you directly to tell them I'm ok to switch from unaffiliated/Alkivar to wikipedia/Alkivar. Sorry for the hassle... but if you were ever around on IRC i'd ask you there :)  ALKIVAR 07:38, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IRC operator priviledges

Hey. I use IRC everyday (under the name I used before my rename, which is about ten down the log), and while I know there are 56 administrators, there's often a lack of admins in UTC afternoon/early evening. I'm often online in those times, and when people come in and troll, I have to shout in the admin channel a lot for ops to kick/ban :p I'm hoping maybe that you could give me ops in the main channel; I think it'd help to deal with trolling a bit quicker. I'm experienced with IRC (I've been an IRCop before) and I'm on IRC quite a lot. If you could, it'd be great - I'm registered with nickserv under my old username. [edit] Ted Wilkes has violated his probation

User: Ted Wilkes has violated his probation, as he is continuing edit warring and has removed content from the Nick Adams page which deals with Adams's supposed homosexuality. See, for instance, [1], [2], [3], [4]. Wilkes also included some additional passages in the Boze Hadleigh article which try to denigrate this author who has written on the homosexuality of celebrity stars. See [5]. The arbcom clearly said that "Ted Wilkes and Wyss are banned from any article regarding a celebrity regarding which there are significant rumors of homosexuality or bisexuality..." and that "Ted Wilkes and Wyss are banned from making any edit related to a person's alleged homosexuality or bisexuality." See [6] and [7]. Wilkes also removed an external link to a Crime Magazine website which includes the best account of Nick Adams's life, presumably because this webpage makes mention of Adams's supposed homosexuality. See [8]. Onefortyone 03:54, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IRC cloaks

Fennec:

I noticed a while back that it looks like you possibly could use a deputy to help out with some of the cloak requests that are made, and given that I have a fairly regular IRC presence and a good working knowledge of the channels and all, I thought I'd volunteer to help out. If you're interested, could you drop me a note (or slap me with mindspillage in the channel) and fill me in on exactly what would need to be done? Look forward to hearing from you! [edit] Sept 11 Wiki

Hi, could you look at my RfA at Sept 11 Wiki, hopefully supporting it! The wiki needs a fair bit of work, some of which is to protected pages, and vandal rollbacks. It could also do with some re-structuring, but that's another story. Thanks Rich Farmbrough 00:57 10 March 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Wigan, etc.

Mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru… and the 4th is? I started the Wigan stuff in good faith, but I was, I submit, provoked by the “we know better” cabal. I’ve managed not to get into a revert war up to that point – even on controversial topics. I did not start out by assuming “Wigan”, etc., was that controversial! PS I’m guessing that the characters you use will not show correctly - unless all users have the correct character set, (eg, MS Mincho typeface), installed? Best wishes :-) Generic Character 00:55, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:Bird

Hi, I'm just reading a bit about this Bird character, who you appear to have been involved in before. This message isn't remotely important, I'm just wondering... Is it physically possible to have that wide a range of IP addresses? Suppose an average person can access four different addresses. How is it possible to set up enough proxies (if that's the right word) totally pickle a wikipedian's brain as to his location? I love to pickle people's brains, (for example in a Politics essay, confusing my teacher by refering to President Johnson's impeachment, he thought I meant Lyndon Johnson, who was never impeached), but how does this dude(ess) do it?
