Felix Varela Senior High School is a secondary school located at 15255 SW 96th Street in Miami, Florida. Varela serves portions of Kendall, an unincorporated area outside of Miami; its principal is Connie Navarro.

Varela was built as an overcrowding reliever for G. Holmes Braddock High School and Miami Sunset High School; construction began in 1998 but due to several delays in construction (mainly concerning funding and local area politics) the school's opening was pushed back several times. Varela finally opened in the Fall of 2000.

The school was named for Father Félix Varela, a Cuban priest from the 19th century, and a popular figure for Cubans in Miami.

It opened its doors to about 2,000 ninth and tenth graders (classes of 2003 and 2004) on August 28, 2000. Enrollment at Varela High grew sequentially after each school year as more incoming freshmen enrolled. Eventually, the school reached the status as a full-fledged high school when it finally filled in students from the grades 9-12. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Felix Varela's athletic rivals include G. Holmes Braddock High School, Miami Sunset High School and John A. Ferguson High School.

Its newspaper is The Viper Vibe, which is a part of the High School National Ad Network. The school's yearbook is the Crotalus. Varela has also had two literary magazines in its past: S.O.S. (Shedding Our Skin) which lasted two years but was terminated when the sponsor left the school. A new literary magazine is starting in the 2006-2007 school year and will be titled Vox Vipera, Latin for the Viper Voice.

[edit] Alma Mater Lyrics

SILVER AND GREEN
Lyrics by Robert Sandler

Silver and green,
These colors we do hail.
Our flag stand above us saying:
“We shall not fail.”

Silver and green,
These colors give us fight,
Our team marching proudly onward
Glist’ning and bright.

Silver and green
Makes us Vipers through and through!

Hail our Varela High
Our Alma Mater Varela High
We sing on with pride our,
“Our Varela High”
