"Fear of the Dark" is a song written by Steve Harris, bass player and main songwriter for Iron Maiden, as the title track to Iron Maiden's 1992 album Fear of the Dark. The song is said to be about Harris' childhood fear of the dark. It's also the only song off of the "Fear of the Dark" album to still be played in concerts today, though "Afraid to Shoot Strangers" was also played often from 1995-1998.
The single "Fear of the Dark (live)" is the 26th single released by the band. This live version of the song (as well as the live version of "Bring Your Daughter...To the Slaughter") is taken from the live album A Real Live One. The single reached number 5 in the UK charts and has since become a fan favourite and a must-play at all Iron Maiden concerts. The live version of "Hooks in You" was recorded at the Wembley Arena, London, UK on the 17th of December 1990.

[edit] Numbers from the Beast version
An all-star version of the song appears on the tribute album Numbers from the Beast, and features Chuck Billy on vocals, Craig Goldy on guitars, Rickie Phillips on bass, and Mikkey Dee on drums. This version follows Harris' original composition, but differs in terms of guitar solos. Billy also departs slightly from the original vocal melody, and also adds a dark edge by performing the song in a style more reliant on growls.
