[edit] DoCB Initiative - verified/wikified
Caught your comments on a couple of the stubs I did for the project. ( I did a number of the Taschereau family plus some other folks). If I do any more, I will try to get the date thing straight..won't verify unless i do. I tried to figure out the template for dates but couldn't. My big problem is that I am on a land line for internet so I try to work off-line and then post articles fairly quickly. I need more time to look and learn...(santa didn't bring me the satellite hook-up I requested. :-) ) I am open to suggestions as to improving my input but do have the "air time" problem. [edit] DoCB copyvio?
What's up with that? The whole set of Dictionary of Canadian Biography pages have been relocated. --Big_Iron 23:02, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
- I was told that I created this list, and I've made so many of these lists that I didn't even bother to check before I moved it. They are copyvios, though, not like phone books, because they only include names that were specifically selected by that organization as being prominent people. Since significant creativity was put into making the list, it is copyrightable, and they've chosen to copyright it. You should probably move it to your user space. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-01-19 13:50
- Actually, I'll move them all under Wikipedia:Canadian wikipedians' notice board/Dictionary of Canadian Biography. — 0918BRIAN • 2006-01-19 13:53
- You are wrong, they do not copyright the list of names, they only assert a copyright on the biographies themselves, which we do not reproduce. The list was something *I* created (at great effort, and in a form that is nowhere used by DoCB) by extracting the names from all of the biographies. In any case, this is not a commercial enterprise that we are some way competing against... they say only that...
-
- users exercise due diligence in ensuring the accuracy of the materials reproduced;
- the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online be identified as the source; and
- the reproduction is not represented as an official version of the materials reproduced, or as having been made in affiliation with or with the endorsement of the University of Toronto, the Université Laval and the National Archives of Canada.
Fawcett5 20:45, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- I do not believe that having a list is a copyright violation. I just took a look at the copyright notice. The second sentance of the link provided above states, "The biographies, for which the University of Toronto and the Université Laval hold the copyright, and the Web site are protected by the provisions of the Copyright Act, by Canadian laws, policies and regulations, and by international agreements." We haven't copied the biographies. So, we were fine in regards to the copyright. Also, I will move the Dictionary of Canadian Biography page back into the regular namespace. I can't imagine what problem that might have with that page. -- JamesTeterenko 20:54, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
Question
Do the names as lited in (http://www.utoronto.ca/dcb-dbc/dcba/listOfSubjects/l.htm) correspond to the DoCB list of wiki fame in terms of format? (Stormbay 23:15, 20 January 2006 (UTC))
Stormbay, I'm not sure if I understand exactly what you mean, but the names are not in wikipedia format (i.e. wikified and in firstname lastname order), nor are they disambiguated as many of the DoCB names are, nor have they been "verified" as we have been doing when a wiki article is created. I was not aware of nor did I use those pages to create the DoCB list. I hope this helps answer your question. Fawcett5 16:46, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
- Fawcett5, can I just check on your last statement where you said you didn't use the pages to create your list. How did you create the list? If you didn't simply copy that of the DoCB then there is no copyright infringement as you've generated the list seperately, and that probably is also true if you read the book and wrote out a list of people in it. [edit] DoCB Lists
For what it is worth, I have done a little research and do not agree that the pages are a copyvio. However, I can't find anyone who might carry some weight to stick their neck out and write a letter. Any progress? (or have you given up in disgust?) (Stormbay 22:30, 24 March 2006 (UTC))
- Maybe I overstated "expert" but I was having a conversation with a lawyer friend of mine and I brought up the subject. (Bear in mind that free advice is worth what you pay for it). He has spent 30 +/- years in a firm that does mostly corporate stuff which has included copyright issues. He said that, if it is essentially a list, it is no different than a telephone directory. In a telephone directory, everyone has access to the use of the list which in turn is used to actually access the product. (I should have written it down but that's the gist of it). I don't think this adds anything new to the argument and I apologize if I raised some expectations in my note above. My guess would be that this is no big deal to the DoCB people. However, I gather it is to some folks here. (Stormbay 22:49, 27 March 2006 (UTC))

You blocked this user in September last year, indefinitely. I wasn't an admin then, so I don't know if it was ever brought up to ANI. However, the user had made only four edits, and seems to have remained remarkably civil on his talk page. could I request that you either look his case over, or post info about the indef block (as most admins do) to WP:ANI for other admins to look at it? Cheers, NSLE (T+C) at 07:15 UTC (2006-05-26)

In going through articles tagging them with {{TrainsWikiProject}} today, I came across Image:CPRinYoho.jpg that you uploaded. [edit] Image:World's Tallest Totem Pole, Victoria, British Columbia.JPG
This is a wonderful image! I want to nominate it for WP:FPC but I am wondering about the license. it says:
This file has been released into the public domain by the copyright holder, its copyright has expired, or it is ineligible for copyright.
It says you created the image, if so it would help if you could change the licensing template to {{PD-Self}}. Thanks! HighInBC 17:43, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bio Box Reverted
I see that you have reverted my addition of the Biography Project box to talk pages for Laurier Lapierre and Gordie Howe. It seemed to me that these articles both qualified for that project. Is there some reason why including them in the bio project proposal would not be appropriate? Ahh, I think I just figured it out. It looks like I put them on the main page by mistake. Sorry about that. I will go ahead and put them on the talk page instead. KenWalker | Talk 17:45, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Please stop blind reverting this article into an attack article. Your version does nothing to establish notability of this individual, and would require the deletion of the article. Furthermore, it violates the terms of WP:BIO... you can have controversy in a biography, but you cannot have an article that is solely an attack peice, no matter how sourced your material is. [edit] "Grapefruit seed extract has now been finalized."
I have updated the GSE article by the objective standards of accuracy, neutrality, and completeness.
Now I would like to work on another article. This is amazing how wikipedia works.
Please create a stub for benzethonium chloride since it is not currently covered by wikipedia yet. You have created more articles than anyone I know.
Please consider making a new article for benzethonium chloride. Thanks for everything.
Also, I would like you to create a "redirect page" entitled >>>Citrus seed extract<<< that would link to the grapefruit seed extract article.
I have no idea how to create a redirect page. Thanks for your help. Best Wishes and Good Day, Nicole.

A plagiarism-detector bot has indicated that, in 2005, you copied the article on John Macoun from an external website. I sincerely hope that you have not done this sort of thing again.

- For the record, the plagiarism-detector bot is being run by Daniel Brandt (you may have heard of him?); as such, we have to treat its every report with extreme caution, and make sure that all legal matters are properly addressed. DS 18:57, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
This is most offensive. There was no plagiarism, as your review will reveal. I have restored the article, and I certainly do not appreciate the tone which you have adopted with a wikipedia administrator of long standing. Fawcett5 18:52, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- As you should have been able to ascertain with even a moment's inspection of the wikipedia articles history, the item at www.ulsterhistory.co.uk was lifted verbatim from wikipedia, not the other way around. Note how their article includes items that were added to the wikipediaarticle by third parties weeks or months after the initial creation by me. Remember, this IS a free licence encyclopedia, people can and do copy US all the time. Be a bit more thorough next time before tossing around serious and unfounded accusations. [edit] Image:Tantoo Cardinal.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Tantoo Cardinal.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Unspecified source for Image:Charles-Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Charles-Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 07:45, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Possibly unfree Image:GeorgeEngelmann.jpg
The dude has been dead since 1884 and the source is clearly indicated. This is obviously public domain. Fawcett5 21:39, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- The source is a secondarey source not specifying where it got the image so the image is in practice sourceless. The {{PD-US}} template assumes that the image was first published in the US another calim which would need to be substantiated with a source. However it is true that a photograph of someone who died in 1884 is likely to be PD-old (assuming that the photograph didn't outlive Engellman by 52 years in which case it is copyrighted) so I will therefore let the case rest. /Lokal_Profil 23:46, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Arthur_Laing.jpg listed for deletion
If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it, but use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.
If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.
