[edit] Observations
To end war and to decrease the probability of future wars you need multilateral disarmament agreements. Translated to personal gain this means: When you are living in a greedy society it can be difficult to change your lifestyle, decrease your hours of work and promote meaningful leisure time and community acitivities. Forms of "multilateral disarmament" could be cohousing and ethical consumer cards as both share the idea of a social contract that promotes the application of mutual ethical criteria in a peer group that is relevant to you. (see also: collective intelligence)
unilateral disarmament can have limitations: You can simply ignore that you neighbour's house is several times the size of your house and that his or her budget for luxury items is several times your buget and still give what you consider excess money to build schools and pay teachers in developing countries but when a sufficient number of your neighbours play the rat race instead there is a danger that price increase and related effects will have an impact on your own buget. The same is true when you aim to reduce your own weekly hours of work unilaterally. A monetary economy without counter measures for these effects (see multilateral disarmament agreements) will always tend to follow the group with the larger budget (e.g. as long as there is a market for expensive but inferior mobile phones that break after 2 years somebody will provide them and make money in doing so). Similar is true for young womens' use of makeup: a group that accepts the mutual challenge and lacks the collective intelligence to break it can find itself in an arms race, only in this case unilateral disarmament is an obvious alternative.

The problem with the rat race is that, even if you win, you are still a rat.
