The thermodynamic entropy S, often simply called the entropy in the context of thermodynamics, can be defined in two ways:
- It is a measure of the quality of heat. For example: the heat extracted from a high-temperature body (such as the steam in a steam engine) can do more useful work than the same amount of heat extracted from a low-temperature body (such as an ice cube being cooled in a freezer). This concept of entropy was originally introduced in 1865 by Rudolf Clausius, in the context of classical thermodynamics.
- It is also, roughly speaking, a measure of the disorder present in a system. This definition, formulated in 1877 by Ludwig Boltzmann, is one of the basic concepts of statistical mechanics.
