[edit] History

Opened in 1969 by developer Ernest M. Hahn and originally anchored by The Broadway, JCPenney, J.W. Robinson's, and Buffum's, Fashion Valley long competed with the adjoining Mission Valley Center. In August 1981, the center was expanded, adding Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus and establishing Fashion Valley as the fashion leader in Mission Valley.

During the 1990s wave of department store consolidations, Buffum's closed in 1991, with its space being taken over in 1992 by I. Magnin[1]. J.W. Robinson's became Robinsons-May in 1993, while I. Magnin closed in its turn in 1995, selling the loctaion to Saks Fifth Avenue[2]. In 1996 The Broadway was merged into Macy's.

In October 1997, a $120 million renovation opened[3], including the addition of a second level, 80 new shops and restaurants and a food court. Enlargements of the Macy's, Nordstrom, and Robinsons-May stores, as well as the opening of an AMC Theatres multiplex followed in 1998. In 2001, the owner of the property, Lend Lease's Prime Property Fund, brought in Simon Property Group as half-owner and manager of the property. Lend Lease soon exited the American market, selling its advisory business to Morgan Stanley, which now oversees the Prime Property Fund.

Robinsons-May shuttered its store in March 2006, and the location was refurbished and reopened as San Diego's first Bloomingdale's on November 18, 2006.
