Milnor's famous undergrad solution of an open problem was about Borsuk's conjecture. The incident is described in some detail in the book A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar (Milnor and John Nash were fellow graduate students). I don't know if the Fary-Milnor theorem is related. The Fary-Milnor theorem was a conjecture by Borsuk. I don't remember the details from A Beautiful Mind so I don't remember whether the urban legend-ish nature is discussed, but I remember reading that the story is exaggerated. Milnor almost certainly knew it was an open problem. I'll look into it sometime. --Chan-Ho (Talk) 16:46, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
