Farthing Wood

Farthing Wood is a fictional location in Colin Dann's book series The Animals of Farthing Wood.

Farthing Wood was the birth place of many of the animals who made the journey to White Deer Park. They were forced to leave the wood through the combination of two deadly factors: urbanization and drought. Human expansion led to development on the heath that surrounded Farthing Wood. The wood itself began to be logged, and the pond that sustained the animals was filled in, leaving only a small stream that was diminished in size because of the drought. The animals, led by Fox, Badger, and guided by Toad, decided to leave Farthing Wood in a desperate attempt to reach the nature reserve of White Deer Park.

Several years later, Tawny Owl returned to the location of the former Farthing Wood in an attempt to find a mate. Only one tree of the wood was still standing, and the town had been named Farthinghurst in homage to the destroyed Farthing Wood. Farthinghurst was later struck by a hurricane and the last tree was blown down, leaving Farthing Wood as only a memory.
