Farm to Market Road 400, or FM 400, is a Farm to Market Road, a state maintained road which serves to connect rural and agricultural areas to market towns, in the U.S. state of Texas. It provides access to rural areas of West Texas in Swisher, Lubbock, and Lynn Counties. The road was designated on June 25, 1945.
FM 400, as originally designated, ran from SH 114 in Idalou northward to the Hale County Line. On July 9, 1945 is was extended from the Hale County Line to FM 54 west of Petersburg. The road was next lengthened on December 16, 1948 12.2 miles south from Idalou to Lubbock County Road 7300 (CR-7300), just north of the Slaton Municipal Airport. On March 9, 1949, plans for FM 1074 were canceled and instead FM 400 was designated to connect 15.7 miles from the intersection of US 87 and Swisher County Road 21 (CR-21) northwest to the Lubbock County line through the town of Wilson.
Further extensions were authorized on December 17, 1947 and January 27, 1950 from FM 54 north to the Plainview city limit, adding 21.0 miles. A pair of short additions were made on May 23, 1951 when FM 400 was taken 2.4 miles from CR-7300 in Lubbock County to US 84 Business in northern Slaton, and then from US 84 in southern Slaton to the Lynn County line, north of Wilson. December 17, 1952 saw 10.6 miles added from the previous terminus south of Plainview to Swisher Couty Road Ee (CR-Ee), of which 6.2 miles was transferred from FM 768. The northern terminus was extended 5.1 miles to FM 145 on October 29, 1953. The final amendment to FM 400 in the 20th Century occurred on January 26, 1965 when .2 miles was added within the city of Slaton when the old location of US 84 was redesignated to SL 251.
