Faravid

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Faravid is also a name of a Finnish journal of North Finnish historians.

Faravid was a semi-legendary King of the Finnic Kvens who is mentioned only in one source, in the medieval Icelandic Egils saga. According to the saga, Faravid made an alliance with Norwegians to fight against Karelian invaders. It is impossible to know whether this story is true or not, but it is basically realistic. If Faravid existed, he probably was a Finnish tribal chief or warlord during the 12th century CE. The saga mentions him in a 9th century context, but this is too early to be credible as far as the Karelian attack is concerned.

Faravid is not a Finnic name. It has been speculated that it could have been a Norse translation of names Kaukomieli ("far-yearning one") or Kaukamoinen ("far-traveling one"), known from Finnish folklore.
