Far East University is located in Gamgok-myeon, Eumseong County, North Chungcheong province, South Korea. It was founded in 1994 by Dr. Taek-hee Lyu. The school flower is the chrysanthemum.

When it first opened its doors on March 5, 1994, the school was a technical college known as Far East Information College (극동정보대학). It became a university in 1998, and the first graduate programs began in 2000.

The undergraduate courses of Far East University are divided among eight colleges and seven independent departments:

- College of Law
- College of Information Communication
- College of Design
- College of Teaching
- Department of Secondary School Special Education
- Department of English
- Department of Japanese
- Department of Chinese

- Department of Sports and Leisure
- Department of Electronic Commerce
Graduate courses are divided among four graduate schools:
- General Graduate School
- Graduate School of Business Administration
- Graduate School of Education
- Graduate School of Industrial Information
