[edit] Hi

Footwork are you up to having a conversation about a few things at all? SatuSuro 01:22, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Heheh that reminds me of some good jokes about paranoia - not the right time and place though. Its nothing so much as wrong, as what can be improved - and patience all around. Some of your edits have attracted the proverbial tags which need to be dealt with at some stage, and some of your edits show that you could be a very valuable contributor. Its just getting the balance of encyclopedia article needs versus your own experience..Its whether you would like some hints/help/ with the tagged arts - and some general conversation about what keeps the ants off - - its up to you! I'll be off (taking my kids off to the movies in half an hour - but if you're interested - leave a message and I'll give you a litany of problems to be dealt with later in the day or the next... If I dont hear from you - I'll try to do a list of things that need dealing with later anyways SatuSuro 03:21, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Wish it was that easy. For a start to keep the turkeys at bay you need to sign your messages :) probably tommorrow now - I'll check some of your articles and give critiques - that might be the way... I'm off now SatuSuro 03:49, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Hey saw your flag out for an adoption - excellent. That is the way to go - hope it works out. It will make life a lot easier for you - and hopefully will develop strategies to bump the tags off some of your articles! Good luck! SatuSuro 15:03, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
I'll save the hatchet - and pass over the tools of advice to orderinchaos - you're in good hands! Also the user page getting populated like that - looks good! SatuSuro 15:26, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Adoption request

Hi, I see you've been working hard on non-Perth WA-related articles - well done!

I note that you have requested adoption under the Adopt-A-User program. Please take a look at my userpage and see if I am a good fit to be your mentor. If you agree to be adopted by me, then let me know on my talk page by clicking the "+" symbol at the top of the page and letting me know. If not, I would still be glad to answer any questions you have at any time, or to help with copyediting or wikifying of any contributions you wish me to look at. Cheers Orderinchaos78 07:08, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Excellent - just give me a shout if you need any advice or assistance. Orderinchaos78 11:32, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Beagle Bay art

Hey thats not bad - what you might do is look at what I just put that in to tag it for the WA project on the talk page. That gives the article a handle and keeps the geographically challenged outsiders somthing they cannot much around with - once in, and its claimed for the west ozzies - and not some .. whatever. Sorry I couldnt help myself! Its worth doing! SatuSuro 15:35, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Happy feet - not yet. Today it was eragon and ,,, borat... Hey you've got your signature working! well done -you're making progress.SatuSuro 15:40, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok all done

  • Metropolitan Water Board (London) is where the old article went
  • Metropolitan Water Board (Western Australia) for the perth article or would you prefer Metropolitan Water Board (Perth) anyhow take your pick and edit away.
  • Metropolitan Water Board is now a DAB page if you go with (Perth) qaulifier you'll need to change the link on this page.

Anyhow time to collect some zzzzzzzz Gnangarra 16:28, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Oh yeah Bot dont like page blanking, they tend to revert as its normally just vandalism, use the move tab if you need to alter a page name. Any problems just ask I'm around a bit too much so most questions get answered quickly Gnangarra 16:31, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Across the top of the page theres the article, discussion , edit tabs etc theres also one called move which lets you move the article with talk page and history to another name. Normally I would start a discussion but it was a stub article so it shouldnt be contentious. Gnangarra 16:37, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Mwb Please don't create redirects for articles that don't exist. Thanks, Sarah 16:43, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

So In case you dont understand that important warning - _never_ start working on a disambig - unless you have more than or including two existing articles fixed first - last night you were going backwards on how you should do it. ALWAYS look at an example - go in and have a look. If you dont know what you've meant to do - _ at this stage _ask first_ there's usually always someone online who can answer in this godforsaken place. SatuSuro 22:07, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

The discussion above looks pretty confusing to me.

If you want to create an article at a title that already exists, such as Metropolitan Water Board, you have three options:

If your article is by far the most prominent

(careful, this option can offend)

  1. Move (using the "move" tab at the top of this page) the article to another title, e.g. Metropolitan Water Board (London);
  2. The move will turn Metropolitan Water Board into a redirect to Metropolitan Water Board (London). Overwrite the redirect with your article;
  3. At the top of your article, add the tagline:
For the London utility, see Metropolitan Water Board (London).
If your article is the less prominent
  1. Create your article at Metropolitan Water Board (Perth);
  2. At the top of the Metropolitan Water Board article, add the tagline:
For the Perth utility, see Metropolitan Water Board (Perth)
If neither article has a strong claim to prominence
  1. Create your article at Metropolitan Water Board (Perth);
  2. Move the Metropolitan Water Board article to another title, e.g. Metropolitan Water Board (London);
  3. The move will turn Metropolitan Water Board into a redirect to Metropolitan Water Board (London). Overwrite the redirect with a disambiguation page:
Metropolitan Water Board may refer to:

There is more detail to master if there are three or more articles with a claim to the same title; but this will do for now. Sorry about the information overload. This is longwinded but hopefully fairly clear. Hesperian 04:50, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 17 Mile dam

The stub is vitally important to prevent orphan tags - any location in wa can get a stub tage lkike that. No tag - potential hassle

Most of your text is anecdotal and first hand experience = not encyclopedia content. Literally no WP:Notability defence can be enlisted here. You need to find a newspaper report - web site or library/book item to corroborate your anecdaotes - otherwise its out. full sto!p. Also if you can link other arts - that helps - for a see also. Hope that helps - for a start! SatuSuro 08:38, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

BTW - there are no superheroes here - just other editors :) .... most have a range of descriptors for admins - depending on the circumstances - but with WP:Civility and WP:NPA to be considered - theyre just other people like us on a keyboard somewhere else SatuSuro 08:50, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

I used it as a reference recently, it has Public works stuff like 17 Mile Dam and MWB etc. You can ask your library to get the copy at Perth City transferred to your local one. Or drop in there if you are in the city. Fred 13:39, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Good work :)

Just wanted to say you're doing a great job with the articles for the northern region - when I have time we might have to have a look through some of them and see if we can get them referenced and filled out, and get a few of them on the project's Good Article list. Also got a new user from the Wheatbelt who's willing to improve articles out there. We're starting to get things moving for Western Australia finally! Orderinchaos78 01:08, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Has

Anyone walked you through the making an article in sandbox first and then putting it up once youve got all the bits together? SatuSuro 03:23, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Probably a very good idea to keep the b----s at bay until youve got it up and running :).

What you do - is on your user page - create a red link on the page -

  • Put the square brackets on either side of user page name with the added bit of 'sandbox'
  • it would look like User:Fancyfootwork/sandbox aka User:Fancyfootwork/sandbox/article
  • Then you save your user page - it will come up as a red link - then you click on the red link page and it will open
  • Good idea to put the tag (which has the curly brackets) userpage at the top of the page.
  • Then save it
  • The you are ready to type up your dam articles without any nosy b----- mucking around while youre trying to do it
  • THEN a very good idea when you have got to a certain stage is to bother gnangarra, orederinchaos myself or others you might know to have a look - let us tweak it - then you can put it out there!
  • It really saves an extraordinary lot of grief and unwanted attention if you can work it out!

Give a shout if you need any help SatuSuro 03:37, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

To put it out there you use the move tag dont copy and paste, or just ask we'll do it for you. remember to treat it like an article and list all refs, add images and subsections. Also make sure the article doesnt already exist as this may require admin assistance to merge edit summaries/page history. Gnangarra 03:43, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Hey you are going well! good stuff - you wont believe the grief you reduce yourself to make your articles in there. excellent! SatuSuro 03:47, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

you tried this one yet? http://www.ga.gov.au/map/names/ - excellent for checking locations and names - not perfect but... worth a squiz if anyone hasnt pointed it out yet - if i have sorry for repeating myself SatuSuro 12:51, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your article moves

In Australia, towns are named with the comma convention e.g. Geraldton, Western Australia. All other geographic features are named according to their actual name e.g. Cape Leveque, unless there is a need for disambiguation, in which case we use the parentheses convention e.g. Garden Island (Western Australia).

Also, please don't move articles unless you're prepared to fix any double redirects you create in the process.

I have reverted all of your page moves, except the Kimberley one, whose original location was also incorrect. Hesperian 23:32, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Snake Creek

I am not a hundred persent sure - but in that list we need to somehow get locations that are near the creeks to try to dismbiguate them with qualifying location names that might separated them out - might need to check with hesperian on the best way to do that! SatuSuro 11:45, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I think a good check and all links on that whole list that dont have w.a. actually in their article title will be from the greaat o.s or the great place in the universe- 'elsewhere' :) SatuSuro 11:55, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Has

Anyone taken you through vandalism warning system yet? if not well worth a squizz into the realm at WP:TT - well worth a wander - that tim winton one needs carefullread of edit history of the offender - all reccent edits were vandalism which is why its better to go up. Otherwise first timers with no warnings on their talk page - there is the steady climb - subst:uw-vandalism 1 through to 4 , and after that you take it to AIV. Any questtions - try the warnings from lowe levels - and on more popular articles ssometimes you get beatened by the reccent changes patrol persons who are in there like a shot - but for more obscure west australian articcles you might be the only one to notice! cheers SatuSuro 08:31, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Seasons overlayed

Hello, Fancyfotowork

Help-me, please

The article Seasons have a problem:

when I choose to Hide "Contents" the figure "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/12/Seasons.svg/266px-Seasons.svg.png" stay overlayed.

I suspect that my Browser ( Firefox 2.0.0.3 ).

Best Regards,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:JCOlivie http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usário:JCOlivie

Unfortunately I don't know where to start with this one - it's always a problem when there's lots of large images which need to be displayed that end up stacking. The only solution really would be to shrink the image display on the page and people can click if they need to see a bigger one, but I'm not sure if that would work well in this case. Orderinchaos78 11:38, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
My two bobs worth - is that its not firefox (I have it but hardly ever use it at all, but i checked it out in that mode), but the location of the image code and locations within the article itself - because it is rather crowded - the problem is I cannot even get the things on my own talk page to sit properly in position ...:) - and if orderincahaos is stumped - It is probably worth hunting around for someone who is good with the code - sorry cannot be of more immediate help. SatuSuro 11:53, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kalumburu, Western Australia

I have reverted your move to "Kalumburu Community, Western Australia", for the simple reason that "Kalumburu Community" gets 866 hits on Google; 'Kalumburu -"Kalumburu Community' gets 96,000 hits on Google. I'm not sure what you mean by "better reflect article" in the edit summary. Grant | Talk 15:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Hmm, when it comes to some of these projects, I sometimes wonder about whethere they are obeying WP:Use common names(?) Anyway, Kalumburu appears to be both the official/gazetted name and the common name. Possibly because -- with 500 people -- its more of a town than a "remote community".
I have an open mind about splitting the article; it strikes me that there isn't that much more to say about the airfield(?) I mean once Truscott was built, it reverted to being a mission airstrip. Grant | Talk 15:38, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
What government gazetter are you talking about? Grant | Talk 16:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
http://www.ga.gov.au/map/names/ gives me
KALUMBURU WA LOCU (Towns & Localities) Official -14 17 126 38
KALUMBURU COMMUNITY WA LOCU (Towns & Localities) Official -14 17 126 38
KALUMBURU MISSION WA BLDG (Built Structures) Official -14 17 126 38
Sorry, but "Kalumburu" clearly is an official name and it is the most common one. I'm reverting again. Grant | Talk 16:25, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Just a thought -- it strikes me that we could get ourselves into trouble by adding the word "Community" to the names of places simply because the majority of the population is Aboriginal. And I don't really see what what purpose it serves, when 99% of people are just going to say "Kalumburu", "Oombulgurri", "Looma" or whatever, and these are also official names Grant | Talk 16:39, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

As I said before, if you Google for the phrase "kalumburu community" (with quote marks), you get only 866 hits. You are only getting 44,000 hits when you Google kalumburu + community because you are getting a lot of references to phrases, e.g. "community of kalumburu", "kalumburu, where the community" etc.

I don't think we need two articles either. That would border on "content forking". The priests/mission and the former RAAF base are tied up with the history of the community. And Kalumburu is no less a "town" to its inhabitants than New Norcia (which is where the priests that founded Kalumburu came from). The only workable definition of "Aboriginal community" is simply that a majority of the population is Aboriginal. All towns are governed by "community laws", they are called council by-laws.

I also don't think you can say Kalumburu will "always be predominantly an aboriginal community", because you don't know what the future might hold. It may become a military base again, or it may become a mining or oil/gas town.

More imporantly, why do you want to keep all the aboriginal communities distinct from "towns" in lists? As I said before, I'm very uncomfortable about this, I mean we don't have lists of "Anglo towns", "Muslim suburbs", etc. Grant | Talk 01:38, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

I presume that this discussion follows our discussion at Category talk:Towns in Western Australia.

I can see what you're trying to do here, Ffw. I had a look in the Gazetteer, and Bidyadanga, Djarindjin, Lombadina, Yungngora, Warmun, Wirrimanu and Yiyila are all gazetted as "Name Community". Oombulgirri, Kalumbura and Looma are gazetted as both "Name" and "Name Community". Clearly some government place names board somewhere is distinguishing between towns and aboriginal communities, and is in the habit of including "Community" in the gazetted place names of aboriginal communities.

The obvious question is why do Oombulgirri, Bidyadanga and Lombidina have both names? Perhaps they used to be communities but have since been gazetted as towns. Or perhaps they used to be towns, but were "demoted" to communities because, for example, the post office pulled out. Or perhaps they were gazetted as towns before the decision was made to distinguish between towns and communities. We need to find answers to these questions before we can decide whether these three should be at "Name" or "Name Community".

Meanwhile, in the three cases where both names are official, we really ought to be following the conventions we have currently in place. The two conventions I see as relevant are:

Use the most common name
I don't usually put all that much stock in the googlefight method, but 866 to 96000 is compelling.
Use the original name
Grant65 created the article at Kalumburu, Western Australia, so we ought to leave it there until there is consensus to move it.

Sound reasonable?

Hesperian 02:37, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Fancyfootwork, I'm not saying that you are racist and neither do I think so. I have had occasion to do quite a bit of research on remote indigenous communities in northern Australia, and as far as I know there are a variety of land tenures that apply, from pastoral excisions to communal title to standard freehold.

It may be true that housing and utilities such as water and power are generally funded and provided by local corporations, state/terriory departments and/or ATSIS, rather than mainstream service providers, but even then I would hesitate to generalise.

More importantly, while it's true that residents of such communities are proud of their heritage and are not concerned by being known as Aboriginal communities, the whole subject is politicised because federal, state and local governments refuse to provided full, standard services to the residents of some communities — basically because they are not seen as towns. For example, a friend of mine worked for an Aboriginal corporation in the north west a few years ago and they struggled for months to get shire garbos to do pickups from a community which was not that far from the town. So I expect that many residents would be uncomfortable in lumping communities together.

While I agree that a (hypothetical) future RAAF base would be a totally seperate entity from Kalumburu per se, it would have major ramifications for the community, and the WW2 base clearly had a huge impact on the community, e.g. the Japanese air raid of 1943. Grant | Talk 09:22, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

There are two separate issues here: one is the name of the article and the other is identifying/grouping Aboriginal communities together. I disagree strongly with you on both counts.
An article called "Kalumburu Community, Western Australia" will come up against Wikipedia:Deletion_policy#Merging and WP:POVFORK. I also don't want it to take the place of the "Kalumburu, Western Australia" article in the lists and categories of WA settlements that it is already in.
I dont want to be contradictory for the sake of it, nor do I wish for the matter to be politicised either, but regardless of what we both want, this whole notion of distinguishing remote Aboriginal communities from other settlements, is already highly politicised and has been politicised for many years. We can't just ignore it. You haven't addressed the substance of what I said above. I have not "gone off track"; I have provided you with a strong reason why people in said communities do not what to be ghettoised. On that basis, I think it's unacceptable for Wikipedia to treat all remote Aboriginal communities as being innately similar to each other and innately different from "towns". I'm sorry, but I think what you are proposing to do is exactly like creating a category called "Anglo towns" or "Muslim suburbs", and should be avoided for the very same reasons. That is, it is dubious to lump all remote Aboriginal communities together and — whether you mean to be or not, it is discriminatory. Grant | Talk 12:08, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
