In fact, of FANBOYS, only and, but, and or are prototypical coordinating conjunctions, while nor is close Could you be a bit more explicit about what you mean by "close"? It seems to be that "nor" is the negation of "or" just as "neither" negates "either" (and are used in parallel). Jackbox1971 01:43, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Nor is very close to being prototypical, but it has a number of unique characteristics.
1) When it is used below the clausal level, it requires neither
  1. I like neither x nor y.
  2. *I like x nor y.
2) At the clausal level, nor requires subject-verb inversion.
  1. I hate X. Nor do I like Y.
  2. *I hate X. Nor I like Y.
