Fanlisting

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fanlisting is a website created by a fan of a particular subject, with the aim of gathering together a list (either in database format or hardcoded HTML) of other fans of that particular subject. The term 'fanlisting' as a one-word noun was first used when Janine Mischor created The Fanlistings Network in 2000.

[edit] Brief history

Janine created the original fanlisting for her favorite show Buffy the Vampire Slayer in order to see how many people also enjoyed the show and as a way of collecting the fans from around the world. She then got the idea of opening a network called The Fanlistings so others could open their own fanlistings for their favorite subjects. As The Fanlistings network grew Janine could no longer maintain them on her own, got a small staff of friends to help her out. The network was eventually taken over by Sasha van Twist, who converted it from a static HTML site to the PHP & MySQL backend that is still being used today. Due to time constraints, she no longer has an active role within the network. The network is now run by a Senior Staff of 6 and a team of volunteers from all over the world.

Fanlistings are most often devoted to celebrities, movies, books, TV shows, and such, but they have also been created for subjects ranging from plants to colors to condiments. Since the staff's policy is to only list one site per subject, the chosen webmasters of fanlistings included, sometimes refer to their site as an 'official' or 'approved' fanlisting. Due to misinterpretation, and fear of potential legalities, the TFL site put a notice to potential fanlisting owners urging them to rephrase how they label their sites. Though it has discouraged some confusion, there are still many who mistake each fanlisting, and even the TFL site, as being a direct portal to celebrities. So much so that the site also includes a notice that reminds would-be contacters not to send them fanmail because they have no access to any famous organization.
