[edit] Summary
Aelita's materialization program has worked and she's now living on Earth, but not all is well. A virus given to her by Xana has linked her to the supercomputer, preventing the group from shutting it off. Furthermore, Xana brings his Kankrelats into the real world in mass numbers and unleashes them on the school.
[edit] Recap
The episode starts out with flashbacks of the episode Code: Earth. It shows when Jim got fired, Jeremie told Jim the truth, and ends with Aelita being materalized.
It is Aelita's first day at school. She has been enrolled in the eighth grade with Jeremie, Odd and Ulrich. Aelita enters History class with her friends and admits that she is nervous and wishing she was in a Computer class. Ulrich tries to calm Aelita down by saying, "If there was a class on computers you could teach it!" Sissi notices Aelita hanging out with the three boys, including Ulrich. This observation irks her and fosters an immediate resentment of Aelita. Sissi complains to her gang members that, "All she (Aelita) cares about is having boys around her!" The room is called to order and the teacher, Gilles Fumet, calls on Aelita to introduce herself. She hesitates and Odd stands up to introduce her. Odd says that her name is Aelita and that she is his cousin. The wildcard boy adds that she is a little shy. Fumet takes the opportunity to formally welcome Aelita to Kadic Academy and he starts his lesson plan.
At the end of class the gang goes outside to the Quad. Sitting on a bench, they talk about what Aelita thought about History class. She says she actually enjoyed herself and likes history a lot. With an omnipresent smile, she says, "You have to admit, you people fight a lot. There are wars here all the time!" Ulrich and Odd get embarrassed by this observation. Yumi wanders over at this point and asks, "How's our newest Earthling doing?" Then Jeremie suggests that it is time to shut down XANA. Odd agrees by saying that they should go before they get an invitation.
The gang arrives at the Factory. Jim has set up camp in the Cathedral Hall and is sleeping on a lawn chair with a Japanese Sumo magazine in his lap. The group wakes up Jim, who has been in a sunny disposition since the last episode. Jeremie tells Jim that they are about to shut down XANA and invites the former campus supervisor to join them. Jim replies by saying, "I wouldn't miss it for the world." He reminds Jeremie about the deal they made and Jeremie says he does remember. The whole gang go to the elevator while Jim muses that he never thought he would miss being their P.E. teacher. He then tells the group to call him by his nickname, "Jimbo".
When they arrive in the Supercalculator's Room, the massive quantum computer arises from its super-cooled floor compartment. Jeremie suggests that Aelita should do the honors, but she says that Jeremie should do it, citing that Lyoko was her home and it seems strange to kill it. Jeremie approaches the switch and says, "You have given us a hard time, but if it wasn't for you we wouldn't have met Aelita. This is for all the grief you've given us, XANA. Goodbye and good-riddance." During this speech, Aelita is noticeably unnerved. Jeremie pulls down the switch, but at that moment Aelita faints. Yumi tells Jeremie to turn the power back on, and Jeremie obliges.
Later, Aelita wakes up on Jim's air mattress in the barren Cathedral Hall. Jim takes her pulse with his analog watch and says it is normal. Aelita wonders what happened and Jeremie tells her that she fainted. Aelita asks what fainting is, and Jeremie describe it as being similar to sleep but in a more profound state. Aelita says that she liked it. Jim replies, saying that she may have enjoyed it but she fainted when the power was cut. It becomes clear that that throws a monkeywrench into the scenario. Jeremie asks Aelita if he can examine her and she nods. Aelita goes to the Scanners and gets scanned. Jim wonders if Jeremie can really understand all the information that appears on the screen. When Aelita comes back they notice numerous anomalies throughout Aelita's DNA. Aelita points out that XANA must have infected her with a virus before the Code: EARTH. She justifies her conclusion, citing that she felt that XANA was "holding her back" as the materialization began. Jeremie corroborates this, saying their was a brief drop in power levels before the materialization. The three soon realize that this virus ties Aelita to XANA and if one dies, so does the other.
Jeremie takes Aelita back to Yumi's house in the suburbs. The two walk down the Riverside Vista pathway on the opposite shore from the Factory, talking all the while. Jeremie picks a rose from a flower box and gives it to Aelita, who sniffs it luxuriously and comments on all the new sensations she feels on Earth (sound, smell, etc.). They enter a small park and emerge onto the city center's main intersection (this district was seen before in "Killer Music" and "Rock Bottom?"). Adjacent to the produce shop they see a streetside photo booth (which Aelita mistakes for a Scanner) and take some goofy photographs for fidelity. Once beyond the apartment blocks and office buildings of the city center the two are in Yumi's quiet residential neighborhood. Jeremie drops Aelita at Yumi's front gate. Aelita says that, despite the virus, she had the best night of her life and gives Jeremie a quick peck on the cheek and runs inside. Jeremie then says, "Aelita's.....Wow!" He walks away whistling.
At the Factory, steam emits from the Scanners and they open, but the materialized item is unseen. Jim is awoken by noises and demands what is going on before being silenced.
At school the next day, Jeremie, Ulrich and Odd are talking about the virus. Yumi and Aelita arrive. Aelita is still harping on how great sleep is and Yumi says, "If I hadn't shaken her a little she would have kept on sleeping." Odd jokes to Aelita, saying that soon she will discover the joys of sleeping in class. The bell rings and they all go inside.
This specialized mathematics class takes place in the Science Building and is taught by a male professor instead of Mrs. Meyer. The professor is lecturing on algebraic mathematics asks Sissi to define prime numbers. Sissi nervously replies by saying, "They are greater than one" and everyone starts laughing. The professor then asks Aelita to give "A less hairbrained answer." Aelita responds with an acceptable answer, saying that prime numbers are numbers with a greatest common factor of 1. The professor thanks her, but Aelita goes on to add more information. This confuses the professor, and Aelita attempts to clarify citing a mathematical theorem. This only serves to further befuddle the professor, earn laughter from the class and indignation from Sissi. Then they hear a scream, and all go to the door and see Julien Xao being chased down the hallway by an unseen menace. Suddenly a Krankelat appears. Upon seeing this, Ulrich pushes everyone inside and closes the door. While the professor and students cower in a back corner of the roon, Jeremie concludes that XANA has found a way to materalize monsters into the real world. Ulrich says that Yumi and he will stay in school "to defend the home front", and Jeremie, Odd and Aelita should go to the Factory.
The gang watches Tristan Brossard run down the hallway in terror before making their move. Ulrich serves as a distraction, holding back the Krankelat while the others head to the Factory. Ulrich starts running away from the Krankelat and gets shot once. Odd, Jeremie and Aelita move towards the Factory. On the ground near the Park Odd finds a nail gun and pick it up. Ulrich keeps running and has already been shot a second time, when he is about to get shot again a spear arches over him and destroys the Krankelat. Yumi is there and says, "What will you do without me?" as Ulrich smiles.
In the Catehedral Hall, Odd, Jeremie and Aelita see some Krankelats have been destroyed. Jim's campsite has also been wrecked and he is nowhere to be seen. Jeremie says that Jim really gave the monsters a run for their money. They go down to the Scanner Room and see Jim attacking the Krankelats with a bent metal rebar. When Odd and Jim destroy the last Krankelat, Aelita suggests the she should go to Lyoko. Jeremie is worried about the virus, but Aelita convinces him that stopping XANA is their priority. Odd gives Jim the nail gun and tells him, "It's kind of like a Swiss Army Knife." When Odd refers to Jim as "Jim," Jim reminds Odd to call him "Jimbo." Jeremie transfers, scans and virtualizes Odd and Aelita as Jim goes to help Ulrich and Yumi.
Back at Kadic, Ulrich and Yumi are running from the Krankelats. They go into the Garden Shed. There, Yumi brandishes an axe while Ulrich grabs a sharp-toothed hedge trimmer. The two get back-to-back and charge a kKankrelat while war-whooping. The monster's HUD turns to static as it is destroyed by the garden tools. The two go to the Park and are soon surrounded by Kankrelats. Yumi says that they aren’t going to make it. Then Jim pops up and destroys the Krankelats, shouting insult lines like, "Say your prayers!" while depeleting their forces. Ulrich calls Jeremie and Jeremie tells him that Odd needs some help; he only has 40 life points left. Jim says that Ulrich and Yumi should go to the Factory, since the sooner they stop XANA the sooner they will be saved.
In Lyoko's Ice Barrier Sectorr Odd is fighting some Hornets. He destroys two and the other shoots him.
Then Yumi calls Jeremie and informs him that they are in the elevator. Jeremie says that Odd only has 20 life points left and they need to hurry up.
In Lyoko, Odd destroys two more Hornets but the last one shoots him and Odd is devirtualized. The Hornet goes after Aelita, she ducks inside a cave and makes and ice wall to close the cave. The Hornet tries to shoot down the wall while Ulrich and Yumi get transferred, scanned and virtualized. They run towards Aelita to help her, Yumi throws her metallic boomerang fan but misses and accidentally destroys the ice wall. The Hornets enter while Aelita flees into the tunnel system. Ulrich and Yumi go after the Hornet. Aelita skates down the snaking cave passageways with the Hornet and Team Lyoko on her heels. Yumi chucks her fan and hits an ice stalactite. The fan rebounds and hits the Eye of XANA on the Hornet which destroys it. Ulrich compliments Yumi on her prowess and she thanks him, citing that, "It's all in the wrist. I'm a great frisbee player, you know." Yumi suggests that they should hurry to the Tower
At Kadic, Jim notices the monsters threatening two students. He yells at the monsters to leave the kids alone and shoots them. He orders the kids to evacuate and gets shot a couple of times, but he is not slowed down. He destroys two of the Krankelats out of the three. Jim gets shot two times and falls down.
In Lyoko Aelita enters the Tower.
Jim keeps yelling at the Krankelat, despite being incapacitated, asking it, "Is that all he can do?" and the Krankelat shoots him again.
Aelita puts her hand in the screen, she enters the Code: LYOKO just about when Jim is going to get shot in the face. Jeremie activates the Return Trip to the Past.
After the trip they are back in the rooms. Time has gone further back this Return Trip, having reverted to the day when the materialization program was ready. The gang is talking to Aelita and Jeremie says that they will try the materialization program. Aelita tells him that he knows as well as she does that they can't do anything about the virus. Jeremie tries to convince Aelita otherwise, saying that perhaps she can be treated by medical personnel on Earth. Aelita declines, saying that until XANA is defeated she must remain on Lyoko to monitor the situation. Yumi says that she can still come to Earth to visit for a couple of hours. Kiwi wakes up, sensing Jim coming. Yumi says, "Oh no! We forgot about Jim" Jim comes in and starts telling the gang that he won't leave until they tell him what they are up to. Headmaster Delmas comes in and asks Jim what he is doing. Jim tells him that the gang is up to something and the Headmaster says "Jim, not one of your secret meetings and passage way stories again. This has gone far enough, I am going to have to..." then Jeremie interrupts by saying that they were up to something, that they were going to pull a prank on Hervé and Nicolas. Yumi says that in fact if Jim hadn't come they would have been late for classes. The Headmaster tells them that since they confessed that he will go for Jim's side and not punish them. Jim then asks as the Headmaster leaves why the gang let him off the hook. Ulrich says "Well Jim we have never thank you for the things you have done, Thanks Jimbo." Jeremie says that "You would have done the same to us one day, Jimbo." Yumi gives Jim a kiss on the cheek and says, "You are a hero Jimbo!" Jim stands there stunned and says "Well, go back to class" and he whispers to himself "Wow a hero..." The gang leaves arm-in-arm. Jeremie pulls out one of the photographs that he and Aelita had taken (or, in this case, would have taken) in which Aelita is wearing Jeremie's glasses while Jeremie pretends to fly. The group leaves laughing.
[edit] Memorable Quotes
- Aelita: No air to breathe, no smells, no warmth, nothing! I miss the real world already!
- Aelita: (to Jeremie) It's thanks to you that I'm here!
- (After Aelita regains conscioussness)
- Aelita: Oh, I don't know... what happened? I...
- Jeremie: You fainted, Aelita. It's a little bit like sleeping, or really deep sleep.
- Aelita: (smiles) I liked the way it felt!
- Aelita: It's wonderful to be alive!
- Aelita: Good night. (kisses Jeremie) See you tomorrow. (She closes the door)
- Jeremie: Aelita's... WOW! (walks away whistling)
- Aelita: I really like history class, but you have to admit, you people fight a lot. There are wars here all the time.
- Jeremie: This is for all the grief you've given us, XANA Goodbye and good-riddance!
- Jim: Oh and from now on,call me Jimbo.
[edit] Trivia
[edit] Mathematics
- Aelita defines a pair of prime numbers as two numbers whose greatest common factor is 1; however, a pair of prime numbers would be any two numbers which are only evenly divisible by 1 and themselves respectively.
[edit] Time-related Paradox
- Aelita and Jeremie have their picture taken together in a photo booth. When the past resets, it reset to the time before the photo was taken, yet Jeremie still has it. Technically, as far as the reset timeline was concerned, that photograph was never taken, yet it still exists. This is an example of a wrinkle in time.
- It is possible, this is because Jeremie had it with him during the return trip, but still unlikely.
[edit] Basic Medical Facts
- When Jim takes Aelita's pulse, he uses his thumb. However, you don't take a person's pulse using your thumb, as it will mess up the results.
- "False Start" starts exactly where "Code: Earth" left off, yet Jeremie, who had badly damaged his ankle and wouldn't be able to bear weight on it for at least a week toward the end of "Code: Earth" walked normally throughout "False Start" (before the Time Reversion).
[edit] Cinematic Notes
- In one scene where Aelita, Jeremy, and Jim are together, Aelita has brownish hair, not pink. This may be deliberate, however, for lighting effect. Her appearance at this moment closely resembles Taelia in the episode "The Girl of the Dreams".
- "False Start" begins exactly where "Code: Earth" left off, yet Jeremie, who had badly injured his ankle and couldn't afford to bear weight on it for about a week, is shown walking regularly throughout the episode.
[edit] Character Notes
- Jim Morales's kindhearted side continues but he unfortunately reverts back into the primordial beast he once was.
