"fairyland c/w alterna" is the 36th single released by Ayumi Hamasaki. It was released on August 3, 2005. It instantly shot to #1 on the Oricon charts where it stayed for the full week. After one week of sales, "fairyland c/w alterna" sold over 172,000 copies, making it her highest sales debut for a single for 2005. "fairyland"'s PV was shot in Hawaii and is one of the most expensive music videos ever made in Japan and world-wide. The PV cost 240 million Yen (2 million in U.S. dollars). On the other hand, "alterna" is much less expensive, but has a very strong meaning. The "alterna" PV focuses on Hamasaki supposedly giving her view of today's pop scene. "fairyland c/w alterna" is also Hamasaki's first single that featured different covers for both the CD and the CD+DVD.

fairyland is a upbeat summer song while alterna has more of a rock tone. The remix of STEP you has a reggae/reggaeton sound and the remix of fairyland is electronic.
