The members of the guild Fairy Tail are the main characters of the manga Fairy Tail. It is disliked by the Magic Council because they often cause a lot of unnecessary trouble during their missions. The guild has many members, but the series only focuses on certain mages. Mirajane, while talking to Lucy, hinted that everyone in Fairy Tail carries the wounds of a sad past.[1]
Fairy Tail has five top members: Makarofu, the leader of the mage guild, "That Geezer", standing right below him, Erza Scarlet, Luxus Dreher and Mist Gun. They are the only ones allowed to take S-class missions, which are deadly dangerous, and very well paid if successful. The S-class posters are on the second floor of Fairy Tail Guild.

[edit] Natsu Dragonil
Natsu Dragonil[2] (ナツ ドラグニル Natsu Doraguniru) is the main male character of the series. He has pink hair and he is a member of the Fairy Tail guild, and is a flame mage. Raised by a dragon named Igneel, Natsu learned the power magic style Dragon Slayer, a style said to be developed to kill dragons. It is a mystery why a dragon would teach someone how to slay dragons. Natsu's power seems to increase the more emotional he becomes, as evident from his fight against Eligor. Natsu is one of the more prominent members of Fairy Tail, and is nicknamed the "Salamander", although this nickname seems to apply to Igneel as well. His member's stamp is on his right shoulder. Natsu's tends to suffer from motion sickness when he rides on various modes of transportation, including trains, boats, and carriages, but doesn't suffer this sickness when riding on Happy, since he considers Happy his "Nakama", not transportation. His name, Natsu (夏) means "summer" in Japanese.

Lucy (ルーシイ Rūshi) is a mage and the main female character of Fairy Tail. She is seventeen. At the beginning of the series, Lucy was an independent novice mage wanting to join Fairy Tail. After being rescued by Natsu from slavers, she was invited to join the guild and has been on Natsu's team ever since. Lucy practices Stellar Spirit magic, a skill which allows her to summon spirits from another world using Keys of the Gates. Her Stellar Spirits have varying levels of power, with different one suited for different tasks. Aquarius, for example, can control water, while Taurus has enormous strength. Along with her keys, she also carries around a whip, which she is quite proficient with.
Personality wise, Lucy seems to be the most stable of all the Fairy Tail mages. She has an amount of common sense that the other Fairy Tail mages seem to lack, and often needs to point out the idiocy of Natsu and the others. Her only real personality flaw is a certain amount of vainness. She is self described has having great confidence in her sexiness. Lucy also has a love for literature. She is in the process of writing her own novel about the adventures experienced in Fairy Tail. She has an issues with her father, who she dislikes.
Gold Keys: The gold keys are very rare, and open the gates of the "Ecliptic Zodiac". Each gold key has the Zodiac symbol of the one it is used to summon on it.
- Aquarius: Aquarius is a long haired mermaid with three piercings on each side of her tail. From what is seen about her, she is selfish, has a boyfriend, and apparently dislikes Lucy. She is referred to as "The Water-Bearer"
- Cancer: Appears as a slick hair stylist with sunglasses, wielding pairs of scissors and crab-claw shaped hair. He has six large crab-legs that come out of his back. When he was summoned, Happy bet that Cancer ends all of his sentences with kani (crab), but actually, Cancer ends all of his sentences with ebi (shrimp). He is referred to as "The Crab".
- Taurus: Taurus is a minotaur with a white and black splotched coat and a nose ring, like that of a bull. He wears a speedo, with gloves with bandages wrapped around his forearms, knee-high boots, a collar with some kind of tag hanging from it, and a strap around his chest to hold his weapon, a giant, two bladed axe. He is a pervert, as when he was first summoned, instead of a traditional greeting, he complimented Lucy's breasts. He is referred to as "The Bull".
- Virgo: Virgo is a maid who has shackles and chains around her wrists and can tunnel underground. She can take any form of any female appearances depending on the master. She was first seen with the Duke of Evaroo as a giant overweight maid with an ugly face in Chapter 5 and later into a slim and beautiful version after the ownership is transfered to Lucy. She refers to Lucy as "Mistress", but Lucy doesn't want her to call that so Virgo suggested to refer to Lucy as "Princess".
Silver Keys: The silver keys are fairly common and can be bought in stores. Each has a small symbol that is descriptive of what it summons.
- Crux: Has not appeared yet, is described as "The Southern Cross"
- Horologium: Horologium is a large clock with arms, legs, and a face (on the clockface). There is a large enough area inside it for Lucy to hide inside. he is described as "The Clock".
- Lyra: First appears in chapter 28, she wears a bonnet, a dress, and has wings on her back. She can sing about people's feelings, such as when she sang a song about Gray, causing him to cry. She also takes requests. She seems to know about magic spells as she tells the group about the moon's magic, moon drip, and how it can overcome any magic spell. Is described as "The Lyre".
- Nicola the Canis Minor: "Nicola" (renamed Plue by Lucy), is apparently the same Plue from the manga-ka's previous work. Natsu apparently has the ability to understand him.

Happy (ハッピー Happī) is an assistant of Natsu, a cat with some magical power allowing him to speak. He can temporarily grow wings on his back and fly, he can carry one person at a time in this form. He's very close to Natsu and becomes friends with Lucy quickly. Happy appears to be a full fledge member of Fairy Tail, and even has a member stamp. It is not yet revealed if talking animals are common in the Fairy Tail manga world, or if Happy is a mage that's simply been transformed into a cat.

Mirajane (ミラジェーン Mirajēn) is described as the poster girl or drawing point of Fairy Tail. She is nineteen. She appears to play a sort of motherly role within the guild, and is often seen running the bar at the guild hall. She has never been shown to be in a bad mood, and can tolerate all of the guild's eccentricities. Even getting hit on the head with a bottle didn't cause her to stop smiling. She appears to use water magic, as well as some kind of transformation magic.
The only time where Mirajane has been shown in a grim mood is when she found out one of the S-Class jobs were missing (stolen by Natsu, Happy, and Lucy), and an elite member, Luxus, had replied that he knew about it, but did not bother to stop it.

Makarofu (マカロフ Makarofu), is the "Master" of the guild. He is eighty eight. He frequently attempts to balance reprimands from the council and the eccentricity of his guild. He encourages Fairy Tail to do what they feel is right, but he has shown some concern that Natsu, Ezra, and Gray will someday level a whole town. His magical abilities include Titan magic, giving him the ability to grow his body parts gigantic and his whole body into a giant shadow creature, and can control various other forms of magic including fire, ice and wind, which give him an immense magical power. His existence is a mystery and so far his only weakness is being a bit pervert. His name is also romanized to 'Makarov'.

Loki (ロキ Roki) is a member of the Fairy Tail guild. He is very flirtatious with attractive women, being top ranked "Mage you want to have as your boyfriend". He tries to flirt with Lucy but after knowing that she's a Stellar Spirit mage, he decides to forget it and broke up with her. Mirajane said that something must have happened to him with a similar female Stellar Spirit mage. She also mention that he once tried to flirt with Erza, but nearly got himself killed by her. His weapon is a magical ring.

Kana Alberona (カナ・アルベローナ Kana Aruberōna) is a member of the Fairy Tail guild. An attractive woman with a short temper that seems to use some type of card magic, she is always shown drinking some kind of alcohol, usually a giant barrel of ale.
[edit] Gray Fullbuster
Gray Fullbuster (グレイ Gurei) is a member of the Fairy Tail guild, and is often accused of being an exhibitionist. He's eighteen. While he doesn't seem to enjoy showing off his body, he does tend to lose or forget his clothes quite often. He and Natsu have a friendly rivalry, and can often be seen fighting one another. He practices ice alchemy, and Lucy suggests that this is the reason that he and Natsu don't get along. His member stamp is underneath his collarbone.
During the Lullaby of Death events, he fights and defeats, with his ice magic, Rayure, one of the Eisenwald Guild. After Natsu defeats Shinigami Eligor, and the evil spirit from the Lullaby of Death is awakened, he fights along side with Natsu and Erza. Together they win against the spirit.
After Natsu, Happy and Lucy run off with an S-Class mission, Gray is sent by the Master to retrieve them. He finds them, and engages Natsu in a fight in order to defeat him and bring him back to the guild house, however, the battle is interrupted by a fisherman who asks them if they are there to destroy the curse, and invites them in his boat.
Despite not wanting to follow, as his purpose was to bring Natsu, Happy, and Lucy back, he is rendered unconscious by Natsu and dragged on with them to the S-Class mission. On the island, he agrees to join them on the mission because as he puts it, "It'd irritate me if you guys get to the second floor first. And if you guys get expelled, then that'd be boring.
On the island, some of Gray's past is revealed. The person who taught him his magic was a woman named Ur, who gave her life in order to seal a demon called Deliora. Another of Ur's students has also shown himself, Reitei Leon, who says that it was Gray who killed Ur.

Elfman (エルフマン Erufuman) is often quoted saying "Men should solve their problem with their fists". Presumable this is because his magic can turn his own fists into stone. Despite this, both Natsu and Gray have easily knocked him out. His member stamp is on his neck.
[edit] Erza Scarlet
According to Happy and Mirajane, she is a very strong mage in Fairy Tail and wears an armoured suit. Erza Scarlet (エルザ・スカーレツト, Eruza Sukaaretto), who is nineteen, appears to be a very strict person, often criticizing the bad behavior and habits of the other guild members, causing most members to apologise for fear that they might invoke her wrath. She likes people who answers quickly to her questions. Her strength is so great that even strong mages such as Natsu and Gray fear her. In fact, Natsu and Gray fear her so much that they pretend to get along in her presence even though they normally can't stand each other. Despite her great strength, she recruits Natsu and Gray for her next mission. Mirajane comments about that team being the strongest to be formed in the Fairy Tail Guild. Happy said that Erza's magic is beautiful because it causes a huge amount of blood to spill from her opponents.
She's a sword mage who uses a magic sword and uses Ex-quip, an ability to swap, to swap weapons at her own will. Her strongest magic so far consists in a transformation in an armoured knight after ex-quipping her magic armour, surrounded by many swords, which are thrown against opponents called 'The Knight', earning her nicknamed Erza the Titania. Erza has a second magic armour form. In this second form, she only uses one sword and has wings like a bat attached to the armour. One of the Guild Master that witness this, said Erza second armour apparent is used as a one-hit attack to take down opponents.
After the fight against the evil spirit hidden in the Lullaby of Death, she agrees to fight with Natsu. In their battle, Erza changes into an armor called the "Flame Emperor's Armor" and is said to be flame resistant. While in this outfit, her hair is tied in two high ponytails and there is no armor on her shoulders, rather more on her limbs. The boots resemble something like a dragon's feet. While they are fighting, a messenger from the Council arrives, with the order to arrest Erza, for the damages caused in the last Fairy Tail battle. She seems to have some kind of connection to Sieglein, as shown when she was being guided to the trial. Sieglein told her to never tell others about a particular incident. After the encounter, she states that Sieglein is evil.
She is currently on a ship traveling to the island that Lucy, Natsu, Gray and Happy are on.
[edit] Mist Gun
One of the other two mages at the same level as Erza. He hates to be seen, so when coming to Fairy Tail, he puts everyone to sleep. He wears a hooded cape to hide his face. The only ones to know his true aspect are Makarofu and Luxus.

One of the other two mages at the same level of Erza. He wears spiked headphones and smokes cigars. He is very arrogant with the other mages of Fairy Tail and claims to be the strongest, even above "that geezer".

A mage only referred as "That Geezer" by Luxus.[3] Mirajane puts him in the top five mage of Fairy Tail, second in command only to Makarofu.
