Contents

[edit] Circulation and Distribution

The Mirror is distributed to news stands on campus every Thursday during the academic year publishing 4,000 print copies and broadcasting an email to over 15,000 online subscribers. In the 2006-2007 school year it will begin featuring magazine-style special sections more than once a month.

[edit] History

The students of Fairfield University founded and published the first edition of The Mirror in 1977. The newspaper was founded after the merging of two prior publications: one produced under the supervision of the University (The Voice), and one published independently (The Free Press and Review). The online edition was founded in 2000 as one of the initial partners of the College Publisher network.

Dr. James Simon has been the adviser of The Mirror since 1998.

[edit] The Mirror Online

The Mirror's Web site, fairfieldmirror.com, has become one of the most-read college newspaper sites in the country. In December of 2005, the web site began featuring game stories about Fairfield basketball games, and in May of 2006, the Web site began featuring daily content from all five sections of the paper.

[edit] The Mirror Sports Forum

In May 2006, The Mirror launched The Mirror Sports Forums, where fans of the Fairfield Stags can discuss their favorite sports teams.

[edit] The Mirror Sports Blog

In December 2006, The Mirror Sports Editor, Dan Akeson '07 along with writers Keith Conners, Tom Cleary '10 and Chris Simmons launched The Mirror Sports Blog providing daily updates, discussion, and breaking news on Fairfield Stags Athletics.

[edit] Notable Editors

In 1984, Thomas Moore saved the newspaper from permanent cancellation stemming from an April Fool's incident that offended many on campus. The item, published in what was at that time the annual lampoon edition called "The Morron," had been inserted by an editor with no other staff members having signed off on it prior to publication. The Mirror, which had its subscription canceled by the school, was saved after the "Thomas Moore letter" was submitted to the administration promising better oversight for the paper. The Mirror's subscription was restored and the practices established by Moore continue to this day.
