The FAI eircom League of Ireland First Division is the second tier of the Republic of Ireland's new FAI National League created following the merging of the FAI and the League of Ireland. It sits below the FAI eircom League of Ireland Premier Division and is the successor of the League of Ireland First Division which was established in 1985.
All clubs participating in the old league were invited to apply for inclusion in the new Premier Division with the top twelve, as selected by an Independent Assessment Group, being handed a spot in the Premier Division. A remaining 10 were to be placed in the First Division.
