Fagersta is a municipality in central Sweden. It is situated in Västmanland, with its seat in Fagersta, a town with 11,000 inhabitants.

The city is located in the crossing between the two railways between Ludvika-Västerås and Avesta (Krylbo)-Örebro, in the heart of the historic Bergslagen region rich in copper and iron ore. There has been mining activity in the Fagersta area since the 15th century but it wasn't organized until the 17th century and wasn't made a corporation until 1873, when Fagersta Bruks AB was founded.

Fagersta is also known as a municipality where the Swedish Left Party has a majority of seats in the council. The current mayor of Fagersta is Stig Henriksson, from the Left Party.

Fagersta received its Royal Charter and city privileges in 1944 when the industrial hot spot of Fagersta merged with its service oriented neighbour Västanfors.
