Faerie's Aire and Death Waltz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Faerie’s Aire And Death Waltz (from “A Tribute To Zdenko G. Fibich”) is a satirical musical composition, copyrighted in 1991, by composer John Stump. The piece is noted for being purposefully unplayable and filled with jokes. According to the piece itself, it is “based on a Cro-Magnon skinning chant”.

The music itself was arranged to be completely impossible to play, including such things as: ridiculous time signatures (for example, 66/66 and 6/1); several whole notes clumped into such shapes as a hexagon and a triangle; and many ridiculous musical directions such as “Cool timpani with small fan”, “Release the Penguins!” and “Remove Cattle from stage”.

Contrary to common belief, “Faerie’s Aire and Death Waltz” is only one page in length. An often-circulated page, thought to be the second page of the “Faerie's Aire”, actually belongs to “String Quartet No. 556(b) for Strings In A Minor (Motoring Accident)”.

[edit] Zdenko G. Fibich

Zdenek Fibich, whom this piece is part of a tribute to, is an actual classical music composer from the late 1800s. He wrote over 600 works, of various kinds: about 10 operas or other stage works, 3 symphonies, overtures, symphonic poems, various chamber music pieces.
