Kakashi and Orochimaru: Face-to-Face! (Japanese: 一触即発!!カカシVS大蛇丸 - Isshokusokuhatsu!! Kakashi vāsasu Orochimaru) is episode 40 of the anime series Naruto. The episode's storyline is from the Chūnin Exam manga arc.

[edit] Plot

After Sasuke uses his Lion's Barrage against his opponent in the selective phase of the Chuunin Exams, he insists that he does not need medical attention, though he is clearly fatigued and in pain. Kakashi refuses to listen, however, to his protests, and picks him up. He takes him down to what presumably is the basement or a windowless room, and marks seal-runes all over Sasuke's body. He then tells him that the pain will only last a moment, and makes numerous hand-signs to perform a Curse-Sealing Jutsu. Sasuke then screams for what is to be perceived as thirty-or-so seconds, then falls unconscious. To add more problems, Orochimaru shows up and states that, "It has been a long time, Kakashi." He then steps towards Sasuke and Kakashi gets in between them. "You must have certainly grown to be able to seal one of my curse marks." Kakashi steps in between Sasuke and Orochimaru, saying that if the Sannin took one more step towards Sasuke, one of them would die there.

Apparently unwilling, or just not seeing the point in fighting Kakashi, Orochimaru fades back into the distance. The scene then jumps presumably five minutes, enough for Kakashi to drop Sasuke by the hospital. This shows the Sensei walking back to the balcony where the selectives are taking place, and his hand is to his forehead. He's saying to himself, "What was I thinking? Challenging one of the Sannin?!" Then Sakura asks him if Sasuke is okay, to which he replies, "Yes, he's safely in the hospital." He is thinking, ...and guarded by the Black-Ops (ANBU) division!

All the while, Shino and Zaku continue their fight. Zaku had faked severe injury to his arms to trick his opponent. However, Shino had snuck his beetles into both of Zaku's arms as a precaution. As a result, Zaku's attack was unable to leave through the opening of his air tubes and instead left holes in his upper arm. Hayate calls the match in favor of Shino.

The participants for the next battle, Kankuro and Misumi Tsurugi, are chosen at the end.

[edit] Trivia

  • In the anime, after the battle with Shino, Zaku's arm has deep cuts where the air came out of. In the manga, after the battle with Shino, Zaku's arm was blown off because of the pressure of his wind attack.
  • abumi means stirrup in Japanese, stirrup is one of three bones in the ear (The stirrup, anvil, and the hammer), which has to do with sound.
