Faculty of Engineering, University of Melbourne
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Melbourne is the oldest engineering faculty in Australia. It was established in 1861, only 8 years after the establishment of the University of Melbourne, and was made a Faculty in 1889. The Faculty offers undergraduate courses in Engineering through its Bachelor of Engineering (across all departments except Geomatics), and also in Geomatics and Computer Science (through the Bachelor of Computer Science). These courses are certified by Engineers Australia and have international recognition. Recent additions to the undergraduate degrees include new degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Management (which provides a minor stream in management as well as a major in any engineering field). It teaches a substantial number of undergraduate and postgraduate students (around 4,500, including over 1,400 international students from over 50 countries), as well as being a significant centre for engineering research, employing many leaders in their fields.
As with all faculties, the Faculty of Engineering will be affected by the move to the Melbourne Model. Currently it is planned to re-design the current 4 year Bachelor of Engineering, but to encourage a greater level of Postgraduate study and to look at areas where integration with Melbourne Model generalist degrees would be an advantage.
