[edit] Mixed martial arts career
Holanda had a rough start to his career when he fought UFC veterans and lost his first three fights. His first win came via a kimura submission over Kultar Gill on September 25th, 2004. This was Holanda's first fight as a lightweight and he proceeded to improve his record to 4-1 in that weight class and earned the nickname "Mastermind" for his ground skills in Jiu Jitsu. Fabio followed his win over Gill with another over Blake Fredrickson. He was named TKO's "Grappler of the Year", and given a second award for "Submission of the Year".[1] He then faced Rich Clementi (Who starred on The Ultimate Fighter 4) at TKO 24. Holanda lost this fight by TKO at the end of the third round, after having his submission attempts earlier in the fight interrupted by quick stand ups by the referee. He pushed on to another win at TKO 25, beating Alvin Robinson via TKO in the second. He then fought in the MFC organization, defeating Mike Bell with an armbar submission in the first round. Holanda earned a title shot for the TKO lightweight champion Sam Stout at TKO 28, on February 9th, 2007.[2] Holanda looked to control the 1st round of the fight by earning repeated take downs, gaining a mount and attempting two kimura armlocks, but was unable to submit the champion. During the second round of the bout Holanda continued his takedown assault but was visibly exhausted and took several seconds after each attempt to get back to his feet. His corner abandoned the fight at the end of the second round, and Stout retained his championship.[3]
