Ezra Brooks
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ezra Brooks is a brand of Bourbon (whiskey).
Ezra Brooks is Kentucky Strait Bourbon Whiskey, distilled by Ezra Brooks Distilling in Louisville, Kentucky. Note the picture to the right as the label on the bottle displays this place of origin. It is bottled at 90 proof in a cork capped decanter reminicent style bottle. In the past it has been bottled in many different styles of artfully elaborate decanters. Upon searching the internet one can find these old decanters are very collectable.
[edit] Taste
The taste of Ezra Brooks is considered by some connoisseurs as smooth. Upon reading the label on a bottle of Ezra Brooks today (2007), it describes its own taste as follows: "...Ezra Brooks is a genuine sour mash, still bottled at an honest 90 proof; aged naturally in new charred white oak barrels and charcoal filtered for a mellow flavor." A layperson in Ohio describes his opinion of the taste of Ezra Brooks as: "Mellow and lightly oaky, having taste and aroma hints similar to chocolate or perhaps caramel, and a smooth earthy finish. With a bit of bite from the 90 proof Ezra lends itself to being served on the rocks."--D.E., Ohio.
While the higher proof may make some shy away from drinking Ezra Brooks strait, logisticaly the higher proof does have some advantages. Traditional bourbon drinks such as the mint julep-- which is often served outside with lots of ice, will dilute quickly as the ice melts. Mint juleps are the traditional drink served at the Kentucky Derby. Starting with a higher proof can be adventatious and help the beverage's flavor keep in hot weather a bit longer as it can take a bit more diluting than a lower proof. The same is true for just a simple bourbon over ice that is traditionally sipped, not slammed like a shot.
[edit] Tradition
The tradition of Ezra Brooks Bourbon can be traced back to the early 1800s. Seven generations of bourbon whiskey making knowledge was accrued to give the Ezra Brooks Bourbon a distictive character unique of The Bluegrass State. Select grains, limestone water, and special natural aging give Ezra Brooks a distinctive charcoal filtered flavor.
