Exploud (バクオング Bakuongu?, Bakuong in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Exploud in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2] It is popular with reporters Gabby & Ty, mainly Gabby, because of the inability to "shut up" that the two share.

Exploud originates from the words explode and loud. Its Japanese name comes from baku, "bomb," and "gong."

[edit] Biological characteristics

Exploud is a large, imposing purple creature with a huge head vaguely reminiscent of a hippopotamus, an equally gaping mouth (especially when open), and various arrays of holes similar to a pipe-organ's located over its head and body. Hidden underneath these holes are sound-generating organs.

Exploud is symbolic of a loudmouth; its body and vocal chords are specifically constructed to emit noises and sounds of any decibel level, high or low. The holes seen all over its body actually serve a dual-purpose; They can violently inhale air, signifying that Exploud is about to let loose a huge bellow loud enough that it can be heard from over six miles away and strong enough that it can trigger genuine earthquakes (Exploud can even learn the move Earthquake through the TM26). Exploud employs this as its offensive measure against opponents in battle.

The holes themselves can emit sounds as well. The sound-generating organs hidden at the base of each tubular hole can be adjusted by Exploud for tone and volume, and whenever Exploud lets loose a bellow, the noise is amplified by these organs. But Exploud only raises its voice during battle. When communicating with other Pokémon such as other Exploud, it emits slighter whistle-like sounds from its sound tubes instead of its normal voice.

[edit] In the video games

Exploud can only be obtained by evolving Loudred at level 40.

Exploud is a fairly common sight in competitive Pokémon battling, thanks to its robust HP, Attack, and Special Attack stats and knowledge of a wide array of offensive attacks to take advantage of these stats, as well as its Soundproof ability which makes Exploud impervious to several sound-based moves (a few which Exploud itself can learn, as well as a few others like Sing & Grasswhistle).

[edit] In the anime

Exploud has currently only appeared in the one episode - Exploud and Clear. In it, a trainer's Loudred evolves into Exploud at the same time that Ash's Treecko evolves into Grovyle. The Exploud ran away from its trainer, but soon got the will to fight again, and battled Ash's Grovyle.

[edit] In other media

Exploud appears in chapter 221 of Pokémon Adventures, which is in volume 18. When outside the Rusturf Tunnel, Ruby and Courtney (a member of Team Magma) are attacked by two Loudred and an Exploud.

Exploud has appeared on two trading cards, both times as a Colorless Stage-2 Pokémon. They are in:

  • EX Hidden Legends
  • EX Emerald

Exploud is especially notable in the card game as being the first and only Pokémon to feature up to four attacks on a single card, and that applies to both cards released thus far.
