Explo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Explo, or Exploration, is a summer program that is held annually at Yale University, Wellesley College, and St. Mark's School. A typical session at Explo is 3 weeks long; every summer has two sessions included. As of 2006, the session dates were July 2nd to July 22nd for the first session, and July 23rd to August 12th for second session.

The session students are divided into two groups: residential and day. The residential students spend the 3 weeks living on the campus of the college, while day students are transported from their homes to the program each day. Both groups participate in the required classes, but day students do not always participate in the main event each night.

[edit] History

The program was started in 1976 by Ann and Arnold Singal. The idea for Exploration was based on the freshman seminars and Independent Activity Periods at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Exploration originally started as a day program on the campus of Brandeis University. Due to the rise in popularity, the program moved to Wellesley College in 1979. Once there, it expanded to include residential students, as well as allowing the teachers to become RAs, or residential advisors. In 1983, a new program became available to middle school students, though both programs were on the Wellesley campus. The new program was entitled the Intermediate Program, and the original program the Senior Program. However, the housing for the separate programs were on different quads, so there was not an enormous amount of mingling. In 1994, the Junior Program came to life, but it was located on the campus of St. Mark's School, away from the other two programs. In 2001, the Senior Program moved to Yale University, where it currently resides.

[edit] Residential Students

Residential students move into their dorm rooms at the beginning of the session. Senior Program students move into Yale's Old Campus, Intermediate Program students move into one of the Wellesley quads, and Junior Program students into the campus of St. Mark's School. Residential students are confined to the Exploration campus, though Senior Program students are permitted to roam around the Exploration boundaries in New Haven until 7:00 pm.

Approximately 90 percent of Exploration students are residential, though the percentage fluctuates with each program and different years.

[edit] Day Students

Approximately 10 percent of Exploration students are day students.

[edit] Senior Program

The Senior Program, held at Yale University, is the original Exploration program. Students live on Yale's Old Campus. In the morning, students are required to take two classes that they sign up for before coming to the program. In the afternoon, they take a mini-course, which changes weekly. After the mini-course, students are able to enjoy free time, whether on "the Quad" or roaming around New Haven. However, Exploration students are given boundaries for their personal safety. Around 8:00 PM every night, a main event is held. The main events aren't mandatory to attend to; however, the staff at Explo strongly encourage students to attend the events. Usually, the main events last until around 10:00 PM at night, at which students may roam around the 'Quad' area, talking to their friends, until 11 o'clock check-in, after which a student has to stay within their immediate dorm area and are not permitted to go outside.
