Expedition Robinson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Expedition: Robinson is a popular Swedish reality television program, that debuted in 1997. It is also shown in many other European countries. In Sweden it was shown for seven seasons on the public broadcaster, and then moved to the commercial TV3 for its 2004 season. It's one of the biggest and most controversial TV successes in Scandinavia. The final episode of the fourth season was viewed by 4,045,000 people in Sweden which makes it one of the most viewed programs in modern TV history.

[edit] Overview

Its format was developed by Planet 24, a United Kingdom TV production company owned by Charlie Parsons and Bob Geldof. Their company Castaway Television Productions retained the rights to the concept when they sold Planet 24 in 1999. (Mark Burnett later licensed the format to create the U.S. show Survivor in 2000.)

Sixteen contestants are put into a survival situation and compete in a variety of physical challenges. Early in each season, two teams compete, but later the teams are merged and the competitions become individual. At the end of each show, one contestant is eliminated from the show by the others in a secret "Island Council" ballot.

The name of the show alludes to Robinson Crusoe.

The first series of the programme was subject to some controversy, and contributed to a moral panic in Sweden. The first contestant voted off the show killed himself shortly afterwards, with his family reportedly blaming the rejection he felt as a result of being unpopular with the public.

[1] Survivor Africa: Panama and Survivor South Africa: Panama were produced and broadcast simultaneously as two separate series by the M-Net network television station.
[2] This is the second first season to be aired in Australia, as the Seven Network obtained rights to film a celebrity version of Survivor - Celebrity Survivor. The Nine Network continues to hold the rights to screen the American version (Nine had their own Survivor project in 2002 - Australian Survivor - but it was not renewed for another season).
[3] Joint version with 18 Middle East countries taking part in it (watching, voting and/or with a contestant): Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen.
[4] Mountain Dew bought the rights for the American version of the game created by Charlie Parson. The rights of airing were given to three Television stations; PTV (the national Pakistani TV), ARY and TVone (both private Pakistani channels. Only men were casted for this season as women are considered as fragile and vulnerable.

All of the European nations that hire Strix to produce or co-produce their Survivor TV shows all travel together to the same basic location each year and pool their resources so less has to be duplicated. Each nation of course brings its own separate team of contestants. Filming is done in the Summer and the game are shown in the Fall of that same year.
