[edit] Origin of the Name
In response to the question, "Where does the name Exit Ophelia come from?", the band posted this explanation on their website.[4]
Shakespeare is basically accepted as a central icon to intellectualism, drama, performance art, social unrest, fairy tales and visions of class separation. And Hamlet is the quintessential Shakespeare... In Hamlet, every time things get really loud, really emotional, and really show a human reaction to devastation... the next line you see after the storm is, "Exit Ophelia" You are not chained to this world, so there is no reason to hold back... Say your piece with exactly the same vigor and madness that the world uses to address you... give the rant, and walk away. In short... think... feel... and then... Scream baby.
[edit] Causes
- Tibet is one of the causes the band brings up, both on its website and in its lyrics. Exit Ophelia advocates a Tibet that is independent from China. Exit Ophelia supports the political groups Students for a Free Tibet, Los Angeles Friends of Tibet, and Free Tibet, and the charities of the Tibetan Nuns Project and Dharma Shop. As animal rights advocates, they also oppose poaching in Tibet.[5]
- Veganism is a cause the band addresses. The band supports the organization PETA2. The support for veganism is because of both animal rights and health, as well as a sense of self control.[6]
- Environmentalism is also an important issue to Exit Ophelia, which supports Greenpeace.[7]
- As a general rule, the band supports civil disobedience and political activism.[8]
[edit] Mottos
Two of the mottos the band repeats in both its lyrics and the band's blog are
- "Be a voice worth silencing."[9]
- "Scream baby", sometimes coupled with "dream harder".[10]
- "I will change this word absolutely", which is tattooed between the shoulders of lead singer Synthian Sharp.[11]
- "Until every cage."[12]
[edit] Awards
Lead singer Synthian Sharp won the Artivist Spirit Award for the band's Free Tibet music video "BELIEVE" at the 2006 Artivist Awards in Hollywood, California.[13]
