Exile (MUD)

Taken (and slightly edited) from Exile webpage:

Exile is a text-based multiuser network adventure game of the type commonly grouped as MUDs. Exile was originally based on CircleMUD, but has been completely reworked in regard to both the world that it uses as a setting, and the game engine that runs the game itself.

Exile began as an idea between Volito and Marinell, who discussed the possibility of creating their own MUD type game after retiring from another MUD. They wanted to create a game that was accessible to newcomers to MUDding, but would continue to offer a challenge to seasoned players long into their gaming careers. It was Marinell's and Volito's experience that most games out there fall short in this category, and lose their veteran player base to boredom. Exile was conceived and created with both the newbie and the veteran in mind, and the game was created to stand head and shoulders above the rest.

With such a difficult task before them, Marinell and Volito quickly enlisted the aid of two other veteran MUDders who had also retired from the same previous MUD at about the same time. Gora and Hextall were brought on originally as subordinate creators, but quickly proved their worth as developers and were elevated to level 45.

Brief
Compared to more popular MUDs, Exile is a relatively modest-sized game. Exile opened to the public July 1997, and since then, has reached a peak of over 70 players. Players are offered a choice of four races (Human, Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling) and four classes (Mage, Cleric, Warrior, and Thief). Players then proceed to advance to level 41 before choosing their next class. Upon reaching level 41 of their third ascension, players may choose their Hero class (Illusionist, Monk, Ranger, Nightblade) respective to their basic classes.
