Evaine MacRorie Thuryn (Gwynedd)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels of Katherine Kurtz, Evaine MacRorie Thuryn was the youngest daughter of St. Camber of Culdi. A highly-skilled and powerful Deryni in her own right, Evaine was a central figure in the events surrounding the Haldane Restoration of 904 and the ensuing anti-Deryni backlash in Gwynedd.
Evaine Elspeth Jessamyn MacRorie was born on October 6, 882, the only surviving daughter of Earl Camber MacRorie of Culdi and his wife, Lady Jocelyn de la Marche. Throughout her life, she was a devout student of Camber's teachings, inheriting her father's love of scholarly research and education. As a highly-trained Deryni adept with a great deal of experience in arcane rituals, she also continued her father's research into many ancient and obscure Deryni texts. She participated in the ritual that bestowed Deryni-like powers upon Prince Cinhil Haldane in 904, and became a lady-in-waiting to Queen Megan de Cameron after the successful Haldane Restoration. After her father's apparent death in 905, she helped him fully assimilate the memories of the slain Alister Cullen. Over the next decade, Evaine split her time between the royal court, continuing her ongoing research into ancient Deryni rituals, raising her family, and assisting her husband, Lord Rhys Thuryn, in his activities as a Healer. Although she never held an official position of authority in the Gwyneddan government nor a title of nobility, Evaine's close proximity to many of the kingdom's most powerful and influential people made her a close and well-respected advisor. She became a founding member of the Camberian Council in 909, and was instrumental in coordinating their plan to secretly block the powers of unsuspecting Deryni. The anti-Deryni backlash that had been brewing in Gwynedd since the Haldane Restoration finally erupted in violence in late 917, and both her husband and her father died shortly thereafter. After examining Camber's body, Evaine became convinced that her father had failed to completely implement one final spell, leaving him trapped between the realms of life and death. Evaine spent much of 918 researching her father's condition, then attempted to finish her father's spell with the assistance of Father Queron Kinevan and her brother, Father Joram MacRorie. Evaine succeeded in freeing Camber's soul, but at the cost of her own life. Evaine MacRorie Thuryn died on August 1, 918, at the age of 35.
