European route E40

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

European route E40 is the longest European route, about 8000 km long, connecting Calais in France via Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kyrgyzstan, with Ridder in Kazakhstan near the border to China.

The route passes through:

  • Within Belgium the E40 follows the A18, the A10 and the A3
  • Within Germany the E40 follows the Bundesautobahn 44, BAB 4, BAB 45, BAB 5, and again the BAB 4.
  • Within Poland the E40 follows the A4 highway and the DK 4 National Road.
  • Within Ukraine the E40 follows the M11, M06, M03, M04 roads.

The M06 or E40 in Ukraine is in very poor condition. At the start of the M03 in Kiev, it is like a freeway. Unfortunately this lasts only 16 km. Otherwise, the E40 within Ukraine mostly has 2 lanes. From L'viv to Rivne, some parts of the road operate with a barrier between carriageways. On the Rivne roundabout, the E40 has 2 lanes. All the way from Rivne to Zhytomyr, the E40 has a barrier. On the Zhytomyr roundabout, again the E40 has 2 lanes. From Zhytomyr to Kiev the E40 has a barrier separating carriageways; at some parts, the E40 is like an expressway.
