European LC Championships 1999
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Long Course Championships 1999 were held in Istanbul, Turkey from Monday July 26 to Sunday August 1, in the 50m pool of the Ataköy Olympic Pool Stadium. The 24th edition of the event was organised by the LEN. Istanpool resulted in two world- and eight European records. Shining star at these championships was Holland's Pieter van den Hoogenband, who won a total number of six golden medals, and dethroned the king of sprint, Russia's Alexander Popov.
The tournament saw the introduction of the 50 metres events in the breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. New were also the semi-finals in the 50m, 100m and 200m events, and the one-start-rule, which means that a false start will automatically lead to disqualification. A total number of 986 athletes from 42 different countries – a new record – competed in Istanbul.
