Eugene Kingsale

Sir Eugene 'Gene' Humphrey Kingsale is a former Major League Baseball player with the Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers from 1996 until 2003. Eugene Kingsale was born in August 20th, 1976 in Solito, Aruba. He is listed at 6'3" and 170 pounds. He is a switch hitter and throws with his right hand. He has played extensively for The Netherlands national team in international competition, including the World Cup of Baseball, the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece as well as most recently, the World Baseball Classic in March, 2006.

Kingsale was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent on June 19th, 1993. He made his debut with the Orioles on September 3rd, 1996. On July 10th, 2001, he was selected off waivers by the Seattle Mariners. On June 14, 2002, he was selected off waivers by the San Diego Padres. On November 15, 2002, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Rivera. On September 29, 2003, he was granted free agency and signed with the San Diego Padres on November 9th of that year. He is currently a member of the Baltimore Orioles organization and has been since June 1, 2004.

During Kingsale's 7 major league seasons, he has played in 211 games with 533 career at bats. He scored 65 runs, had 134 hits with 3 home runs and 53 Runs Batted In (RBI). He has a career .251 Batting Average and has stolen 15 bases. He played 2005 at AA Bowie Baysox and AAA Ottawa Lynx

  • On September 3, 1996, Kingsale became the first ballplayer born in Aruba to appear in a major league. He made his debut just five days earlier than fellow Aruban Calvin Maduro.
  • Was knighted by Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands in 2004 along with other major league players Calvin Maduro and Sidney Ponson in a ceremony in Oranjestad, Aruba.
  • Was introduced while with Bowie Baysox of the Eastern League as "Sir Eugene Kingsale".
