Eugene is a common (masculine) first name that comes from the Greek eugenes (Greek- ευγενής, "Noble" ). The name shares a root with the word eugenics. Variants include Eugène (French), Eugen (German, Romanian), Eugenio (Italian, Spanish), Yevgeniy (Russian: Евгений), and Gene. The feminine variant is Eugenia.
