Eugen Polanski

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eugen Polanski (born 17 March 1986 in Sosnowiec, Poland) is a German footballer.

Polanski is a midfielder and has played for Borussia Mönchengladbach professionally since the 2004/2005 season, joining the club from local Concordia Viersen in July 1994. In his third Bundesliga appearance, against Bayer Leverkusen on 19 November 2005 (1-1), Polanski scored his first Bundesliga goal. Used either in central defensive midfield or in on the right side midfield, the member of the German Under-21 team had been representing Germany all the way through in his youth and often showed up as captain of the selections.

Vigorously turning down a hasty effort of Poland's then manager Pawel Janas to switch back nationalities in time to represent the country of his birth at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Polanski was a key member of the German Under-21 team at the UEFA U-21 Championship 2006, scoring a magnificent long-shot goal in the fixture against Serbia and Montenegro. His form during the tournament made former Champions League finalist AS Monaco enquire about his services, receiving a swift and proper rejection from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Being tipped as one of a few young players to make the step-up to the senior squad of Germany already during 2006-07 season, the ball-winning midfielder's current deal with Borussia Mönchengladbach is to expire at the end of July 2008 with the club already declaring the urgent intention to agree a long-term extension.
