Etienne Montclair is a descendant of the Māori, the natives of New Zealand, on Earth and has the traditional markings of a Māori warrior tattooed on his face. Etienne’s callsign "Doomsday" was given to him due to his generally pessimistic (or realistic as he says) view of life. He often expressed his negative opinions on the war. Including his belief that the war would end badly for the Confederation, resulting in his death along with every other human.

Etienne joined the Confederation in 2653. In 2655, "Doomsday" was a young, inexperienced 2nd lieutenant from the TCS Austin. He temporarily transferred to the TCS Tiger's Claw with Zachary “Jazz” Colson to replace losses. When the Tiger’s Claw is destroyed in the K’tithrak Mang system, "Doomsday" is among the few survivors. He then served on the TCS Concordia, with the space force rank of Captain.

"Doomsday" was later transferred to the TCS Tarawa during the events of Wing Commander: End Run.

"Doomsday" was one of the only survivors of the Kilrathi War who served on the TCS Tiger's Claw, along with Christopher "Maverick" Blair, Todd "Maniac" Marshall, and James "Paladin" Taggart.
