What is a "chivalrous affair"? Joyous 14:08, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC)

Hey everyone, this book is the worst book I've ever read. Also I think by "chivalrous affair" it's supposed to imply that their affair wasn't purely physical but Ethan deeply loved Mattie (none of this matters; the book is god awful). --142.161.181.136 06:21, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Aye, the book is almost the worst thing I've ever read. Not counting poorly written Computer Talk (1337-speak, bad grammer/spelling), I'd say The DaVinci Code is the only worse thing I've ever tried to read. Of course, that is nothing but an opinion. Question, though... How many people define this book as bad? Me and 142.161.181.136, to be sure, but maybe if enough people agree with that opinion, we could say something about how contempary readers can't stand this thing? I agree. This book was as boring as hell, and just reading the article on it sent shockwaves of relapsing boredom through my body. ...and who the hell commits suicide by sledding into a tree?! He lived on a farm full of sharp agricultural tools! And what's to prevent him from finding a gun, or jumping off of something tall, or stepping out in front of Mattie's train? ...Pff...sledding into a tree... --JSB

I personally don't feel that Ethan Frome even deserves the title of "tragic hero" - "pathetic hero" seems to describe him better. The novel is only good in so far as it induces the same feelings in the reader as those of the character - especially when it's a school assignment. Makes you feel trapped, eh? ;) Eoseth 23:54, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

I hate to insert opinion into even a Discussion page, but you folks are so right that I think "horrible book" may actually be NPOV. Ethan Frome very successfully conveys the tedium of Frome's life on the reader. It's kinda like Andy Kaufman's humor, but instead of fun, it's a bunch of suck. --Explodicle 22:13, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

You're morons. Keep your opinions to yourself. I am sick of morons who don't like this book. Ethan Frome is one of the greatest novels ever written. Leave your bad memories of high school English out of here. GROW UP. Leave this page for real questions. -VIDEO—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.2.152.82 (talk • contribs).

You are obviously a troll, because no human being has ever actually liked this book. Especially someone who is clearly brilliant and well-educated like yourself. --Explodicle 13:08, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Unless he's a pseudo-intellectual who tries to sound smart by pretending to be genuinely interested in ridiculously boring things. I read this book last year in english, even the TEACHER admitted it sucked. I agree with whoever said you feel as bored as if you were living frome's life, absolutely nothing of any possible interest to anyone happens in this book, yet its still considered a "classic" because it's old. Jesus christ, the guy kisses a scarf and that's supposed to be "cheating" on his wife? THIS BOOK SUCKS. END OF STORY.

How did this book get into almost every English department's curriculum if it “sucked” as much as you proclaim it does? Oh yeah, your comment about your English teacher really makes your opinion a fact. It’s not anecdotal or anything. Bitch as much as you want on the internet. The fact of the matter is that your opinion means little to nothing and Wharton’s work will live on much longer than you ever will. This book is a classic for a reason.

p.s-THANK YOU FOR YOUR CLOSING ARGUMENT ON YOUR LAST POST! THERE'S NOTHING LIKE SHOUTING TO MAKE YOUR POINT ON THE INTERNET! -VIDEO

it's a classic because people like you try to make themselves look smart by pretending to like it. The plot is incoherent and boring, there's no lesson you can learn from it, its not enjoyable and has no redeeming features. And its been taken OUT of most english curriculums.

-Try to prove any of your points. I doubt you can. It's just your opinion and as I have been saying Your opinion means nothing. This book is considered a classic. It has been reprinted numerous times. It has sold thousands (and I am being humble here) of copies. Those statistics can be proven. Your useless grudge cannot! Stop trying to say I am being pretentious. I just like this book and consider it a classic. What is so hard to understand? I am sorry if this book is no Naked Lunch. ok, just because i think this book is boring im suddenly lowbrow and stupid. you are being pretentious. The book just isnt that good. I'll respect that you like it, but honestly youre the only person ive ever met who wouldnt rather light themselves on fire and then skin their burning selves alive then read this book.

I edited the line about Ethan's mother dying during autumn. She died during the winter: "He had often thought since that it would not have happened if his mother had died in spring instead of winter.” No mention of autumn.

Also, for some reason the Engineer was mentioned as Jordyn (a female) in the plot synopsis. Since the Engineer was never given a sex or name, this should be erased. Who the hell wrote this article?

And the point of the Starkfield article was? Can't see it myself. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page) 14:59, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Film

Should we include details of the film here, or have a separate article ? -- Beardo 08:32, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

seperate. Its a different thing, plus it needs a lot of space for whoever writes the article to fit in the laughing at how retarted that one scene where ethan and mattie sled down the hill at 2 miles an hour and then somehow get hurt. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.122.93.108 (talk) 03:43, 7 January 2007 (UTC).

We should also mention that Ned Hale opens the film by greeting the Minister (Engineer in the book). The problem with this is that Ned Hale is dead in the book by the time the Minister (engineer) arrives.

Josh, please discontinue vandalising this page. Everytime you vandalise a page, someone has to go out of their way to revert the page in question.
