Ethiopian intellectual property office

The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) is a government organ established in 2003 to provide legal protection for intellectual property rights. Under a Director-General the EIPO comprises five core business units and two support units.

The EIPO aims to be a leading development oriented national intellectual property office that promotes local inventive and creative activities, facilitates the flow of foreign technology and provides a meaningful contribution to the advancement of cultural values and the development of industry and commerce.

The EIPO gives its mission as:
- To provide an efficient and effective intellectual property service that enhances the value and use of the intellectual property assets of individuals, business establishments, research centers, institutions of higher education and technical and vocational centers.
- In support of this the Office gives priority to the following key result areas:
- Protection of intellectual property (IP) rights to encourage national creative and inventive activities,
- Promotion of the wider exploitation of technological information contained in patent documents to meet the technology needs in the priority areas set by the government,
- Training of manpower in the field of IP,
- Conducting policy and legal studies in the field of IP to promote the commercialization of IP protected works, facilitate the transfer of foreign technology and ensure the country’s integration in the global IP system
- Enhancement of understanding of the value and importance of IP among potential users,
- Enhancement of IP administrative and enforcement capacity of IP attorneys, judges, prosecutors, police& customs officials,
- Networking with research centers, academic institutions, chambers of commerce and other relevant federal and regional institutions using existing national ICT infrastructure.
