Etam

Etam[1] (Hebrew: עיטם) is a proper name in the Bible. Etam means "eyrie", "their bird" or "their covering" in Hebrew. There are five references to the name Etam in the Hebrew Bible:
- Etam is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:3 as a descendant of Judah. Etam is the father of Jezreel, Ishma, Idbash and their sister Hazelelponi.
- Another reference in 2 Chronicles 11, mention a town of this name in Judah, located southwest of Bethlehem near Tekoah. It was fortified by Rehoboam. It is now 'Ain 'Atan, at the head of the Wadi Urtas. [2]
- A village in the tribe of Simeon (1 Chronicles 4:32).
- A rock where Samson hid, called the rock of Etam, is referenced twice in Judges 15. It has been identified with Beit 'Atab, west of Bethlehem, near Zorah and Eshtaol[2].
