Estudios Churubusco

Estudios Churubusco is one of the oldest and largest movie studios in Latin America located in the Churubusco neighborhood of Mexico City.
It was inaugurated in 1945 after a 1943 agreement between RKO and Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta (of Televisa). In 1950 it was acquired by the government of Mexico and merged with Estudios y Laboratorios Azteca to form Estudios Churubusco Azteca. Since 1958 it has been controlled by the government of Mexico.
It is estimated that 95% of the films produced in Mexico since 2000 have used many of the services the studio provides.

Estudios Churubusco were inaugurated in 1945 with the film La morena de mi copla starred by Spanish singer Conchita Martínez. The following year Pedro Infante signed with Churubusco and Cantinflas filmed A volar joven in 1947. In 1948 Emilio Fernández directed María Félix and Pedro Armendáriz in Maclovia, a film photographed by Gabriel Figueroa. Luis Buñuel started working at Churubusco studios in 1950 and directed its first film there the following year, Una mujer sin amor. In 1952 Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante made their first and last film together called Dos tipos de cuidado.
In 1954 Adolfo Ruiz Cortines, then president of Mexico, announced a new system of finance for the movie industry and in 1958 it took control of the studios and, with Sube y Baja' with Cantinflas, they produced the first movie processed at the in-house laboratories. In 1960, Luis Buñuel filmed La joven, his only English-language film and Santo made his first film the following year, El Santo contra los zombies. In 1963, Mauricio Garcés and singers Angélica María, Enrique Guzmán and César Costa all filmed at Churubusco. By 1967 Churubusco began filming exclusively in color and the following year made its first film using four-channel sound.
In 1971, the Plan of Re-structuring of the Film Industry is presented and in 1972 the Ariel Award of the Mexican Academy of Film, which was re-activated is presented once again.. 1975 became one of the best years for the cinema of Mexico but by 1978 production dropped significantly. The government of Mexico then created the Mexican Institute of Cinematography in 1982 producing El corazón de la noche in April of that year.
By the mid-late 1980s the cinema of Mexico was going through its worst years. In 1993 Estudios Churubusco exchanges part of its land for federal funds to make the company most efficient. The National Center for the Arts was created in the land donated. The following year Churubusco remodeled its sound and laboratory buildings and created the first THX theater in Latin America certified by both Lucas Films and Dolby Digital as well as a new special effects and dubbing facilities. By 1995 Churubusco replaced its antiquated impression and development equipment for Eastman Kodak-certified equipment and that year saw the beginning of the New Era of the Cinema of Mexico with films such as Like water for chocolate and Cilantro y perejil. In 1997, the studios digitized the sound of all films it produced between 1956 and 1980.
In the year 2000, Churubusco built its first THX sound studio
