Esther Rose

Esther Rose (1901-1990), an American painter, worked in oils, collage, silkscreen and watercolors.

Born Esther Holbeck in Two Harbors, Minnesota, at 20 she married Frank Rose, an amateur photographer and a sports writer at the Two Harbors newspaper, and they settled in San Diego, California, where they established the city's first Karmel Korn Shop in downtown San Diego. They later moved to Carmel, California, where Rose received awards in the Monterey and Carmel Valley county fairs and studied art. Rose, who began painting at age 45 after studying under water color instructor Milford Ellison, is known for her impressionist renditions of California coastal images.
Esther and Frank had three children, including the late Russian Orthodox Heiromonk Seraphim Rose and author and antiques expert Eileen Rose Busby.
