Esperance (town), New York

Esperance is a town in Schoharie County, New York, USA. The population was 2,043 at the 2000 census. The town was given the name of the principal village, which was named for "hope" in French.

The Town of Esperance contains a village called Esperance. The town is in the northeast part of Schoharie County. US Route 20 passes through the town.

The town was first settled around 1739. The town was formed in 1846 from the Town of Schoharie.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 51.9 km² (20.0 mi²). 50.7 km² (19.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (2.29%) is water.

The east town line, partly marked by the Schoharie Creek, is the border of Schenectady County and the north town line is the border of Montgomery County.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,043 people, 776 households, and 571 families residing in the town. The population density was 40.3/km² (104.3/mi²). There were 856 housing units at an average density of 16.9/km² (43.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.14% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.83% of the population.

There were 776 households out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 105.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $42,930, and the median income for a family was $46,940. Males had a median income of $32,331 versus $24,115 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,574. About 4.8% of families and 7.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.0% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.
