Esher is a character in Myst V: End of Ages. He is D'ni, and is one of two major characters in the game (the other being Yeesha). Esher is the first full-blooded, living D'ni to appear in the Myst franchise.

Esher was a D'ni archivist who survived the Fall of D'ni in 9400 DE (1744 CE) by fleeing to the Age of Noloben.

He was not welcomed by the non-human native inhabitants, the Bahro, but was able to survive there because the Bahro were under the control of the D'ni. Esher built a laboratory in that Age and studied the Bahro extensively, performing unpleasant experiments on them. Eventually he learned their technique for linking at will, and learned about the Tablet that could give him full control over their powers.

Believing himself to be the Grower prophesied in the writings of the Watcher, Esher desired to obtain the extraordinary power of the Bahro — although he considered it perverted — and use it to restore D'ni to its former glory.

In Myst V, Esher is friendly towards the player, and appears in all of the game's environments to give hints laced with strong opinion. He detests the Bahro, seeing their work as an abomination of The Art, and seems wary and distrustful of Yeesha.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The player ultimately has to make a choice about who to trust: Esher or Yeesha. This echoes the fateful decision required in the original game Myst.

[edit] Notes

  • The image shown in the top right does not resemble Esher from the game:
"It is very unfortunate that this trailer will give people the wrong impression of what the characters in the game will be like. When you see the actual character in the game itself, I think you'll agree that (Esher) bears very little resemblance to what was shown in the trailer." —Richard A.
