[edit] Welcome, Escondites!

Welcome to our community!
Welcome to our community!

I'm glad you've decided to join us - this is a great project. We do have a lot of users, and are currently working on 1,729,617 articles, so things can be a little intimidating! Don't worry - we love to help out, and we'll try our best to make your stay here as comfortable as possible.
Here are a few links I found helpful when I first arrived here.

You should sign your name on talk pages, discussions and votes by typing ~~~~; our software automatically converts it to your username and the date. Also, if you don't want to jump right into editing articles right now, why not check out the sandbox? Feel free to make test edits there.

I hope you enjoy editing and being a Wikipedian - I definitely do. Although we all make mistakes, please keep in mind what Wikipedia is not. If you have any questions or problems, leave me a message on my talk page, and I'll try my best to help. Otherwise, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

We hope you stick around, and make sure you enjoy yourself! Cheers, lovelaughterlife♥ (user|talk) 17:45, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Subdivisions of former countries

Hi. Thanks for joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Subdivisions of former countries. At the moment, this project looks rather empty - this is because most of our effort has currently been devoted to the parent project Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries. Since this subdivisions project is essentially a subproject of WP Former Countries, most of the guidelines for that project also apply to this one. If you have any particular questions or comments, just let me know. - 52 Pickup 11:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] edit to Arab world map

Hi,

I hadn't realised my edit to the map had been successful. The biggest problem was claiming that Mauritania does not have an Arab population, which is just not true. As the article is about the Arab world, I am not so keen on shading non-Arab regions differently: they're still generally (but not universally) seen as part of it, but I don't feel very strongly about it: that shading would be more appropriate in the article about Arabic or Arab people. I reverted becuase of Mauritania, and will now adapt the text accordingly. --Drmaik 14:46, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Algeria population

Your recent change to the statistics was quite specific; it looks like you based it on a source. It would be good if you could cite that source. Thanks! — mark 14:00, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

You added a link to the French article on Algeria, but I couldn't find the percentages in there. In any case, another edition of Wikipedia can never be a suitable source to cite. Imagine that someone now modified the French article to include a citation of the English version — then we would have a circularity. That is why our verifiability policy prescribes the use of reliable sources external to Wikipedia. So, rephrasing my question, do you have a source for these percentages that is external to Wikipedia? Thanks for your quick response, by the way. — mark 15:37, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What can I do to make this thumbnail work:

Image:Coat of Arms of Strasbourg.svg mmm the code should be : [[Image:Coat of Arms of Strasbourg.svg|thumb]]

You can use it like this.
You can use it like this.

But there seems to be a problem with your image... -- lucasbfr talk 14:18, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

The file is weird. The commons admins are currently dealing with the problem. Hang on. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} {L} 15:01, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
In case you encounter such a problem again, please report it to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab. Regards, — Nearly Headless Nick {C} {L} 15:07, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lebanon edit

I'm sorry. You're right. I reverted that accidently when I reverted your edit. Thanks for being polite about it. —LestatdeLioncourt 12:23, 26 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Algeria map

And those errors are? I don't know Arabic - I just used the names from the Arabic wikipedia, with a desperate appeal on the map description page to inform me of any errors. --Golbez 17:52, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Translating my maps

I would be glad to have any of my maps translated into Arabic. Being completely unable to read the language (or alphabet), you would have to tell me what Arabic articles could use which of these maps, and then we could work together to put the proper words in the proper places. Let me know your thoughts, MapMaster 05:40, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your speedy response. It will take me a few days to create this, but I will. Thanks very much, MapMaster 14:31, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
Here is the map I created based on your information: Image:Invasions of the Roman Empire Arabic.png. I do need the Arabic for "Chalons or Battle of Chalons or Battle of the Catalaunian Fields ". Let me know if there are any changes. MapMaster 03:22, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for all your help. It was honestly very exciting to be translating the map not only into another language but another alphabet. Keep me in mind if you run across a needed map. MapMaster 23:17, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Page blanking

You blanked the page List of communes in Adrar (and others) after you were the only contributor. In future, please could you request pages like this for deletion using {{db-author}} as blank pages indicate there is an article in links and searches, when there isn't really. I have proposed it for deletion under {{db-blanked}}. Thanks, mattbr30 10:38, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Morocco/WS map

Asterion has already answered you on my talk page about the map for the Morocco article. As to the map of WS article, I don't see what is the idea of changing a map with a similar map that shows red instead of green. What is wrong with the original one???--A Jalil 21:19, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Help

{{helpme}}

Hello, could someone help me make the background of

{{{seal}}}/{{{map}}}

white?

And what should I do to make

{{{seal}}}{{{map}}}{{{image}}}{{{nickname}}}{{{motto}}}{{{website}}}{{{othername}}}

and

{{{website}}}

optional in Template:Infobox Algerian City

And

{{{othername}}}

optional in Template:Infobox Algerian Province Thanks!

Hi. I've made the background white for that cell. You can look at the diff for that page at [1] (I also fixed br's) to see how I did it. To make a variable optional, the plain way is to user {{{seal|}}}. See the extra character |? Essentially, you are providing a default value of "blank" so if it's not provided, "blank" will be used. However, that will only take care of the variable not displaying. The rest of the table information around it will still display. Then you have to get into using m:parser functions. and it gets a little more complex. I think the best way is to look at other templates to see how they did it and just copy the same style. Help:Template may be interesting reading for you. I'd recommend looking at Template:College coach infobox. There's a problem with using the | in parser functions (it's well known) and this template addresses that problem. Specifically, all the {{!}} templates you see. I would call this an intermediate level so take your time, it's difficult to understand. If you have more questions, please feel free to ask me on my talk page, use helpme again, or the friendly folks at Category:User template coder. You can find more example templates at Wikipedia:Template messages, but they may not use the latest programming methods (several I've done do not, and use html tags as a fix which is less preferred now). I hope I've helped you. Good luck! --MECUtalk 16:15, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kabyle language

Because Ethnologue is a reliable source, and you need to prove that INALCO claimed 5.5 million. Khoikhoi 20:06, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Are those academic sources? Khoikhoi 20:22, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Can we give a range as a compromise? Khoikhoi 20:40, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Like this: "3,123,000—5.5 million, 7 million worlwide". Khoikhoi 20:42, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Yes, but the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. Ethnologue is a reliable source, so according to Wikipedia policy, it can be included in the article. Khoikhoi 20:47, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
They would agree, because it follows WP:V. Khoikhoi 20:52, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Maps

Please don't change the standard maps used in articles about countries. Thanks. Aran|heru|nar 07:53, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Edit summary

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. Daniel Šebesta (talkcontribs) 00:32, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Algeria

Hello, friend! I have just nominated Category:Transportation in Algeria for renaming to "transport" form. Feel free to comment or vote at WP:CFD. Thank you. - Darwinek 11:13, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Map of Algeria

Yes, I would be interested in re-creating this map for Wikipedia, although I would not be able to include all the detail. This is a map of the states of Algeria? Is that what you would like to show?? Are there other maps available online with this information that I could also use?? Let me know, and thanks, MapMaster 01:05, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Why did you create all those nice locator maps (Adrar, for example) and not put them in an article?? That is curious.

Hey stop one moment. Please remember to link your lists of municipalities to the main article itself see Relizane Province now. Also as the main articles are minor stubs why not put the lists into the main articles? Ernst Stavro Blofeld 13:43, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Ah ok. As long as all the lists of the municipalites are linked in the relevant provincial article. Thanks Ernst Stavro Blofeld 13:48, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Move requests

You may wish to move your move requests for Illizi and Kabylia to the "Other Proposals" section. Moving city articles are almost always contentious, especially when it involves moving an article to a redirect for another article or changing the spelling from one version to another. Uncontroversial moves are to be used only when there is no chance for someone to disagree with the move. --Bobblehead 19:16, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Escondites. As you are a member of WikiProject Algeria, could you please try to tag the discussion pages of Algeria-related articles with {{WikiProject Algeria}}? (see examples [2] and [3]). I am just a bit busy w/ other projects for now. Thanks in advance. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up ® 14:46, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] US Virgin Islands

Please do not revert the changes for the Districts and sub-districts of the United States Virgin Islands again. Doing so could be considered vandalism, and you are already in violation with doing so without consensus. The proper terminology is "Districts" and "sub-districts". Thank you.
