Ertha Pascal-Trouillot

Ertha Pascal-Trouillot (August 13, 1943 in Pétion-Ville, a wealthy suburb of Port-au-Prince) is the first and only woman to date to have held the post of President of the Republic of Haïti. She held the position of provisional president of Haïti for nearly a year, from 1990 to 1991.

Pascal-Trouillot was chief justice of the Haïtian Supreme Court when she became president on March 13, 1990 following a military coup in which general Herard Abraham overthrew the government and then immediately agreed to give up power. In January 1991 her government was nearly overthrown in a coup d'etat. In February 1991 she gave up the post of president as elections had been held and Jean-Bertrand Aristide was sworn in.
