Ernest Ikoli

Ernest Ikoli (1893-1960) was a Nigerian politician and journalist. He was educated at the Bonny Government School and King's College, Lagos. After completing his studies at King's College, he became a tutor at the school. However, he left teaching to pursue a career in Journalism. Ernest Ikoli is remembered today as one of the pace setters of Nigerian journalism and independence struggle. He was the first editor of the Daily Times of Nigeria and the publisher of the defunct African Messenger. Prior to joining Daily Times and publishing, he worked at the defunct Lagos Weekly Record. In 1942, he was elected into the Legislative Council and was re-elected in 1946. In the 1930's, he was one of the founders of the Nigerian Youth Movement and was once the movement's president. During the period, the movement was in an intense power struggle with Herbert Macaulay's NNDP.
