Ernest Goes to Africa is a 1997 comedy film written and directed by John R. Cherry III. It stars Jim Varney, and is the ninth film to feature the character of Ernest P. Worrell. In the movie, Ernest unknowingly comes into the possession of some stolen jewels, and is kidnapped and brought to Africa where he must rescue the woman he loves. The film received a PG rating from the MPAA for language, some mild violence and brief sexual innuendo.

Ernest (Jim Varney) purchases several jewels from a street vendor that (unbeknownst to Ernest) have been stolen from Africa. He attaches them to a yo-yo and presents it as a gift to Rene (Linda Kash), a waitress that he has a crush on. She turns Ernest down, explaning that they cannot be together because she wants to date a man that is more adventurous. Unfortunately, both are then tracked down by two African henchmen, who kidnap them and bring them to Africa. Ernest escapes, but must somehow rescue Rene while navigating an unfamiliar continent and encountering various obstacles.
